Dmitri Rybolovlev (2012)

Dmitri Evgenjewitsch Rybolowlew ( Russian Дмитрий Евгеньевич Рыболовлев; born November 22, 1966 in Perm ) is a Russian - Cypriot entrepreneur , sports sponsor and owner of the French first division soccer club AS Monaco since 2011. The Forbes magazine credited him with a personal fortune of around 6.8 billion US dollars (2019) to one of the richest people on earth .

Rybolowlew has been making headlines since 2015 through his role as the alleged victim of art trade fraud, the Yves Bouvier affair, by the Swiss art dealer Yves Bouvier.

Life

Rybolovlev studied medicine in Perm. In 1990 he received his doctorate and worked briefly as a cardiologist in his father's medical company. He then went to Moscow , where he successfully speculated on the stock exchange, founded an investment company and a private bank .

Immediately after the end of communism , he set up the Uralkali fertilizer manufacturer . However, his financial rise experienced in 1996 a break, as the as "potash king" (Potash King) was in prison called Rybolowlew as an alleged principal of murdering a rival for nearly a year until he was acquitted finally for lack of evidence after a witness had withdrawn his testimony. Rybolowlev then left Russia and has since lived in New York City , Monaco and Cologny on Lake Geneva .

He sold his stake in Uralkali in 2010 for over $ 5 billion to Suleiman Kerimov , Alexander Nesis and Filaret Galtschew . In Geneva , he founded another trading company that made a "sensational entry" on the London Stock Exchange in 2005.

In 2010 Rybolowlew acquired through his financial vehicleOdella Resources Ltd. "With headquarters based on the British offshore - tax haven Virgin Islands was, 9.7% of the shares of the largest bank of Cyprus , the Bank of Cyprus , which at the stock exchange in Nicosia was traded. In 2012, its share was given as 5.01%. The following year Cyprus's banking system collapsed, wiping out Rybolovlev's stake in the bank and causing him a loss of around $ 600 million, according to his lawyer. According to the Bank of Cyprus website, Rybolowlew has not been listed as a shareholder since 2013.

Yves Bouvier affair

With the support of art advisor Yves Bouvier , Rybolowlew is said to have acquired art worth CHF 2 billion, including the painting Nu sur coussin bleu by Amedeo Modigliani for USD 118 million, the painting Salvator mundi by Leonardo da Vinci for USD 127.5 million and other works of art by Picasso , Gauguin , Rothko , Matisse and Rodin . In 2015, Bouvier, who also runs a duty-free warehouse for art in Singapore , was briefly arrested in Monaco on the basis of a complaint by Rybolowlew for fraud.

Bouvier is said to have given Rybolowlew to understand that he was acting as a middleman and not the owner of the pictures. As an art broker, he is said to have asked Rybolowlew two percent commission. Allegedly, however, the Swiss art dealer bought the works of art himself and then sold them to Rybolowlew. According to Rybolovlev's attorney, Bouvier cheated the Russian billionaire for $ 500 million to $ 1 billion in margins. Rybolowlew discovered the fraud in 2014 during a New Year's Eve party in New York when he was chatting with Sandy Heller, advisor to art collector Steven A. Cohen . The latter told him that Cohen had sold the painting Nu sur coussin bleu for USD 93.5 million. A short time later, in March 2012, Bouvier sold the painting to Rybolovlev for USD 118 million. Bouvier is therefore accused of a conflict of interest because on the one hand he is the owner of the bonded warehouse, to which his customers entrust their valuable art, and on the other hand he acts as an art dealer.

In January 2015, Pablo Picasso's stepdaughter Catherine Hutin-Blay filed a lawsuit against Bouvier for stolen goods. According to Hutin-Blay, Bouvier sold two pictures by Picasso, a portrait of a woman and a Spanish woman with a fan , and a sketchbook to Rybolowlew without her consent. A business partner from Bouvier's Paris warehouse company Art Transit, in which Hutin-Blay kept her art, is said to have taken it and sold it to Rybolowlew for 27 million euros. On September 14th, the criminal case against Bouvier was opened in Paris. He was released on bail of 27 million euros. On September 24, 2015, Rybolowlev handed both paintings to the French police on his own initiative .

In November, the painting Salvator mundi , whose authorship by Leonardo da Vinci is disputed, brought in record sales of over $ 450 million to Rybolowlew at an auction by Christie's .

In 2018 Rybolowlew accused the New York auction house Sotheby's of “driving up prices in a secret agreement with Bouvier.” A third of the objects Bouvier acquired and resold to Rybolowlew were realized through the intermediary of Sotheby's. In October, Rybolowlev sued Sotheby's for fraud and breach of contract for $ 380 million in damages. In June 2019, a New York court denied Sotheby's motion to dismiss the case. The court also decided to make the lawsuit publicly available by submitting new, unredacted documents from Sotheby's.

EU citizenship

Rybolowlew bought the citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus in 2012 and is therefore an EU citizen .

Sports sponsorship

Rybolowlew was one of the financiers, along with Roman Abramowitsch and Vladimir Potanin , of a foundation that supports Russian Olympians and whose supervisory body is chaired by Russian Prime Minister Medvedev . His attempt to get into FK Dinamo Minsk as an investor failed.

As Monaco

At the end of 2011, Rybolowlew took over 67 percent of the shares in the corporation (Société Anonyme Sportive Professionnelle) of AS Monaco through his company Monaco Sport Invest for the symbolic price of 1 euro at a time when the club was sportily on the ground. He then became president of the club and promised the club, which was relegated to the second French soccer league in 2011 and was fighting for survival in the 2011/12 season, to invest at least 100 million euros over the next four years.

His older daughter Jekaterina is a member of the board of directors of AS Monaco in 2013, as is Rybolowlew's personal lawyer Tatjana Berscheda.

Under Rybolowlew's leadership, AS Monaco was one of the football clubs in Europe in the summer of 2013 that had spent the most money on player transfers, a total of around £ 140 million for Falcao , James , João Moutinho , Éric Abidal and Ricardo Carvalho . In the same year, the club rose again to Ligue 1, and finally became French champions in 2017 with the best offensive in European football.

Others

property

In 2008, he acquired the "House of Friendship" (Maison de l'amitié) on Palm Beach from the American real estate tycoon Donald Trump .

In 2010 Rybolovlev bought the 2,000 m² penthouse in the Belle Époque style in Monte Carlo, Monaco. The property was acquired for € 220 million. Previous owners included Nick and Christian Candy, the brothers behind Candy & Candy, the interior design and real estate development business, and previously the Brazilian banker Edmond Safra, who died in a fire in the apartment in 1999.

In 2011 he bought an apartment in New York's Central Park for his daughter Yekaterina , the purchase price ($ 88 million) of which, according to Forbes, was the "largest single transaction in the history of the city." The 626 square meter apartment with ten rooms and four bathrooms had previously belonged to Sanford Weill, a former head of Citigroup.

That same year, Rybolowlew also bought US actor Will Smith's mansion in Hawaii for $ 20 million.

In April 2013 Rybolowlew bought the 80 hectare island of Skorpios in the Ionian Sea in Greece from Onassis heiress Athina Onassis . The price was estimated at € 126 million. A luxury resort is to be built there for € 120 million.

Rybolowlew and his former wife Elena owned a piece of land in Geneva (Switzerland) that they demolished in 2008 and wanted to rebuild as the Petit Trianon in the Palace of Versailles. The project was finally abandoned in the couple's divorce proceedings, but the couple had already been banned from the project by the authorities because the building height was significantly exceeded.

He also built two homes valued at $ 135 million in Gstaad, a Swiss alpine resort.

He also owns real estate in Saint Tropez, France .

financial assets

Over the years Rybolowlew owned a collection of paintings valued at around $ 700 million, including works by Pablo Picasso , Vincent van Gogh , Gauguin, Modigliani and Rothko.

He also owns a private jet Airbus A319 and a yacht worth $ 100 million.

Private

The Russian, who is considered media-shy, has been married since 1987 and is a father of two. He is living in divorce from his wife Jelena Rybolowlewa, but after six years of divorce negotiations, he was sentenced to a payment of over four billion Swiss francs in March 2014, which would have made it the most expensive in the world. In the second instance, however, an appellate court cut this amount down to 564.7 million francs (around 520.8 million euros) in June 2015.

At the end of November 2015, Dmitri and Jelena Rybolowlewa announced that they had reached an agreement on the condition of their divorce. As a result, both parties have agreed to discontinue all legal proceedings in the divorce case and the ancillary proceedings in any jurisdiction and to finally drop all claims against the other party as well as against related persons and companies. A sum was not mentioned, but is estimated at 564.7 million francs (around 520.8 million euros).

Rybolowlew has a wide range of sports interests, including skiing, equestrian sports and football.
