Dorothea of Saxony (1591-1617)
Dorothea von Sachsen (born January 7, 1591 in Dresden ; † November 17, 1617 ibid) was the abbess of the empire-direct and free-worldly monastery Quedlinburg .
Life
Dorothea was a daughter of Elector Christian I of Saxony (1560–1591) and his wife Sophie (1568–1622), daughter of Elector Johann Georg von Brandenburg. Her baptism took place for the first time without the usual exorcism and thus represented an important internal church and internal political measure in her father's politics.
Dorothea was elected abbess of Quedlinburg on April 18, 1610. At that time, the bailiff and protector of the monastery was Dorothea's brother Christian II , Elector of Saxony. On July 19 of the same year she was confirmed in office by Emperor Rudolf II .
Her relatively short term in office was calm. It granted the city of Quedlinburg some rights and improved the income of preachers and teachers. In 1615 she set up a coin in the former Augustinian monastery and made use of her coin rack .
During a visit to her brothers in Dresden, on the occasion of the Reformation anniversary in 1617, Dorothea fell seriously ill and surprisingly died only 26 years old. She was buried in Freiberg . Since Dorothea had not appointed a coadjutor , it was up to the chapter to choose her successor.
