Dragon Ball Z Special: The History of Trunks is the second and final "Special" for the anime series Dragon Ball Z , based on the manga series Dragon Ball of manga artist Akira Toriyama based. It aired on Japanese television on February 24, 1993. It was released on DVD in Germany in 2003 . Carlsen Comics brought out the accompanying anime comics in the same year (issues 45-48).

In the future, Goku died of a heart virus. Six months later, two cyborgs named C17 and C18 appear 9 km southwest of the southern capital. These were made by Dr. Gero, a mad and now deceased scientist, was created to rule the world. The aim of the cyborgs is to destroy all people on earth. The Z-fighters die one after the other: First Piccolo, then Vegeta, Yamcha, Tenshinhan and finally Kuririn.

After 13 years, Trunks and Gohan are the only fighters on earth. C17 and C18 destroy one city after another. When Trunks tries to save a city, he's too late. Soon after, he and Gohan face the cyborgs and survive the fight only badly injured. Gohan loses an arm in the process. Even after their recovery and further training, C17 and C18 attack the next city. Gohan also dies fighting and Trunks, who was knocked unconscious by Gohan, is now the only one who can save humanity.

Another three years have passed and Trunks' mother, Bulma, has built a time machine so he can travel back in time. There he is supposed to give Son-Goku a drug against the heart virus so that he can survive and defeat the cyborgs. But before that there is another fight against the cyborgs, which Trunks only barely survives. Then he travels into the past. This is where the series begins.
