Dune is an American science fiction film by the Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve . The film is based on the novel series Dune by Frank Herbert and is a remake of David Lynch's The Desert Planet from 1984. A theatrical release in Germany is planned on December 17, 2020, in the USA on the following day.

Villeneuve had even turned down James Bond 25 as a possible directing project in order to finally dedicate himself to the film.
In January 2018, Villeneuve stated that he envisioned his remake of Dune in a way like an adult Star Wars . Villeneuve didn't just randomly use the Star Wars franchise as a comparison, but went even closer to the relationship between Dune and Star Wars : “Most of the central ideas of 'Star Wars' come from 'Dune', so it will be a challenge to live up to. ”Villeneuve further explained that he would start the remake of the novel series at the very beginning and start with the adaptation of the first book The Desert Planet , in which a conflict between the houses of the Atreides and the Harkonnen over Dominance breaks out on the planet Arrakis, where the coveted drug "Spice" is mined, which is of inestimable value for the entire intergalactic empire.
In March 2018 it was announced that Dune would probably take two years to complete. Villeneuve said the goal is to make two films, maybe more. The story also contains a time jump.
Cast and filming
In July 2018, Timothée Chalamet came up for the lead role. He plays Paul Atreides. In the summer the cast of the female lead of Lady Jessica with Rebecca Ferguson became known. As it became known in January 2019, Stellan Skarsgård will play the villain Baron Harkonnen. Dave Bautista plays Glossu Rabban. Charlotte Rampling is said to be in the role of Reverend Mother Mohiam. Oscar Isaac plays Duke Leto Atreides, Jason Momoa plays Duncan Idaho and Josh Brolin plays Gurney Halleck.
Filming began on March 18, 2019 at Origo Film Studios in the Hungarian capital Budapest. Arrakis are to serve as a backdrop for recordings in Wadi Rum . They also shot in Norway. Filming was finished at the end of July 2019. Further re-shoots should take place in Budapest in mid-August 2020.

The film music will be composed by Hans Zimmer .
The film is scheduled to hit German cinemas on December 17, 2020 and US cinemas the following day.
On February 26, 2019, the Norwegian computer game manufacturer Funcom announced that it would work with Legendary Entertainment to develop video games based on the upcoming Dune film .
