The Town of Dunkirk is located in southern Wisconsin, in the southeastern suburb of the capital Madison . The Town of Dunkirk is traversed by the Yahara River , a tributary of the Rock River, which flows into the Mississippi in the neighboring state of Illinois . The intersection of the three states of Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota, located on the Mississippi, is about 215 km to the west-northwest; it is around 50 km south to Illinois.

The US Highway 51 runs from west to east through the north of the Town of Dunkirk. Wisconsin State Highway 138 runs through the west of the town . In addition, the County Highways A, B and N run through the town. All other roads are subordinate country roads and some unpaved roads.
A railway line of the Wisconsin and Southern Railroad (WSOR), a regional ( Class II ) freight transport company, runs through the town from northwest to southeast . The only passenger in the region is from Chicago circulating to the West Coast Empire Builder from Amtrak , which stops in Madison.
