Étoile Sportive du Sahel ( Arabic النجم الرياضي الساحلي, DMG an-Naǧm ar-Riyāḍī as-Sāḥilī ) is a sports club from the city of Sousse in Tunisia . It is rooted in the Sahel , one of the economically strongest regions in the country. The largest division, football, is home to one of Tunisia's most popular teams.

history

Historical logo from the founding year 1925

When the association was founded on May 11, 1925, there were different names to choose from, for example La Soussienne or La Musulmane . The finally decided name Étoile Sportive du Sahel was chosen because one wanted to represent not only the city, but the entire Sahel region . So the Muslims had their club in Sousse, like the French with Patriote de Sousse , the Jews with Maccabi , the Italians with La Savoia and the Maltese with Red Star .

Etoile was the first "real" local team to reach the championship finals in a league dominated by French and Italian immigrants (1931). Nevertheless, it took another 19 years to win the first championship in 1950. Since then, Etoile has recorded nine championships and ten Tunisian cup wins. The big players on the team include Habib Mougou, Abdel Magid Chetali, Othmane Jenayah (former president), Abdelselem Adhouma, Lotfi Hsoumi, Zoubaier Baya , Zied Jaziri, Francileudo Silva dos Santos , Amine Chermiti and Yassine Chikhaoui . In the last 10 years Etoile has also celebrated great international successes in the African club competitions, such as winning the CAF Champions League in 2007.
