action
The environmental conditions on earth are catastrophic and therefore most of it will no longer be habitable in 2184. People who can afford it live on overpopulated space stations . Because of a disease ( called a syndrome ) in their offspring - which is believed to be caused by conditions in the space stations - people are looking for a new home planet. The Earth-like planet G889 - called Earth 2 - located in the G88 system at a distance of 22 light years seems to be suitable for them .
The billionaire Devon Adair, whose son Ulysses is also ill with the syndrome , plans to relocate colonists - mostly families with so-called syndrome children - as part of the Eden project on Earth 2, against the views of the Earth government and the space station council . After a hasty take-off due to a government attempt to destroy the spacecraft and a 22-year flight in cold sleep according to G889, the vanguard ship must be evacuated while the cargo is in orbit around the planet.
After the crash landing with an escape pod, the crew of the vanguard ship , reduced to 17 people, discovered that they were thousands of kilometers away from the planned landing site on the planet. With minimal equipment follows a month-long march to "New Pacifica", the planned landing site of the following families with their "syndrome children". During this time they will have to adjust to life on the planet. Among other things, the group finds out that the "living" planet with the Terrians and Grendlers produced intelligent life. The Terrians - a people living underground - are closely connected to the planet and can communicate with them through people's dreams. They also had the power to cure Adair's son Ulysses of his illness by making him their equal. Soon, however, the group also has to realize that they are also threatened by human dangers, since Earth 2 was used as a penal colony for criminals years ago and the High Council of the Space Stations is planning to settle millions more people on the planet.
production
The series was shot in the wilderness of New Mexico , because a suitable location was sought that should look as "extraterrestrial" as possible.
During the first season, the show's market share fell from 21% to 9%. The television station NBC and the production company Universal were not satisfied with it. You separated therefore from producer Michael Duggan and replaced him by Gil Grant . This had been given the task of changing the concept of the series for a possible second season and making it more suitable for the masses.
The new concept provided for far-reaching changes in the series. Among other things, two main roles from the series should be written and replaced by new ones. The remaining figures should have been changed as well. A strong male group leader was planned, the development of special skills in the existing male characters, such as. B. superhuman strength, special martial arts, and less dominant female figures (romanticization). In addition, some of the species already discovered on Earth 2 should be replaced by new ones.
Since the broadcaster NBC was not satisfied with the new concept, he decided to discontinue the series. A little later, the broadcaster UPN expressed interest in including the series in their program, probably also because one of those responsible was a fan of the series. However, since he did not agree with the realignment of the series either, they broke off the negotiations.
