Eberhard von Zeppelin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eberhard Moritz Adolph Albert Graf von Zeppelin (born May 22, 1842 , † October 30, 1906 in Konstanz ) was a German historian, banker, Lake Constance researcher, hotelier, author and ambassador of the Kingdom of Württemberg.

family

Eberhard von Zeppelin was the son of the former royal Hohenzollern court marshal and cotton manufacturer Friedrich Jerôme Wilhelm Karl von Zeppelin and his wife Amélie Françoise Pauline nee. Macaire d'Hogguèr (1816-1852). Their father David Macaire (1775–1845) gave the Zeppelin family the Girsberg Castle in Emmishofen (Switzerland), where Eberhard grew up with his siblings Eugenia and Ferdinand von Zeppelin and was brought up by private tutors . Since 1861 he was a member of the Corps Suevia Tübingen and the Corps Misnia Leipzig (III). He was married to Sophie ( Russian : Sonja) Freiin von Wolff-Stomersee (1840-1919) from Stomersee ( Latvian : "Stāmeriene") in southeastern Livonia (then Russian Empire , now part of Latvia ) with whom he was married since August 1868 had four sons. Sophie's cousin , Isabella Freiin von Wolff (born May 4, 1846 in Alt Schwanenburg / Livonia; † January 2, 1922 in Stuttgart ), married Ferdinand von Zeppelin, the brother of her husband Eberhard, on August 7, 1869 in Berlin.

Life

Zeppelin served as a lieutenant in the Württemberg Army . He represented the kingdom in the diplomatic corps in Italy and Austria . In Budapest , Zeppelin was chargé d'affaires of the Württemberg embassy and represented Ambassador Baron Thumb von Neuburg after his recall. After his time in the army and in the diplomatic service, Zeppelin returned to Lake Constance. In 1867 he acquired the Kunzenhof estate in Kreuzlingen in the canton of Thurgau from the heirs of the Konstanz textile manufacturer and banker Moritz Macaire . He had the residential building expanded into a castle and, based on his first name, gave it the name Schloss Ebersberg (Thurgau) . Zeppelin continued to serve as chamberlain in the Württemberg state services.

banker

However, Eberhard von Zeppelin did not content himself with farming for a long time as the new landowner. In 1872 he joined the family's own bank Macaire & Co. as a partner and investment advisor. There he acted as the financial trustee of his siblings and Swiss relatives and invested the sometimes huge inheritance of the family profitably. By participating in start-ups, the Zeppelin family became important promoters of industrialization and transport development in the German-Swiss Lake Constance region . They held shares in several railways in Eastern Switzerland and Baden and in the textile industry in Hegau . So they took part in the cotton spinning & weaving mill in Arlen owned by Carl Ten Brink in Arlen (Rielasingen-Worblingen) and bought a brush and paintbrush factory in Donaueschingen . From then on, this also supplied horse brushes to the Ulm Uhlan Regiment "King Karl" (1st Württembergisches) No. 19, to which Eberhard's brother Ferdinand belonged.

hotelier

Through the line of Zeppelin's mother, Amélie Françoise Pauline Macaire d'Hogguèr (1816-1852), the indigo dyeing factory on the Dominican island was owned by the family. The burgeoning tourism, which in Constance received further impetus through the railway connection opened in 1863, and the declining profitability of the dye works prompted Zeppelin to convert the former monastery into an upscale hotel. For this purpose, Zeppelin founded a stock corporation , had the building complex rebuilt under the direction of the Stuttgart architect Emil Otto Tafel and opened the Insel-Hotel on April 15, 1875. Zeppelin managed the hotel business until 1902. Then he transferred the management business to Mathias Brunner from Glarus and his wife.

Researcher

Zeppelin was very interested in his homeland. As a representative of the Grand Duchy of Baden on the board of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its environs , he initiated the first precise mapping and scientific research of Lake Constance in 1886 and coordinated the project jointly supported by the governments of the five countries bordering the lake. Zeppelin was involved as an author and editor in the publication of the results in the series of Lake Constance research . From 1892 to 1906 he was President of the Lake Constance History Association. His work as a local researcher, author and editor was very much influenced by this, as a selection of his works shows.

religion

Zeppelin belonged to the reformed denomination and was a member of the Protestant parish in Egelshofen . When the Thurgau liturgical dispute escalated in 1874 due to the prohibition of the apostolic church and Pastor Karl Friedrich Steiger therefore left the Protestant regional church, Zeppelin supported the pastor in founding the independent Protestant parish in Emmishofen . Eberhard von Zeppelin, like his brother Ferdinand later, became a member of the dissident community
