The Hehlenriede at the town hall of the Isenbüttel municipality

The Hehlenriede is a creek about 13 kilometers long on the Papenteich plateau with a catchment area of about 80 km² west of the city of Wolfsburg and southeast of the city of Gifhorn . The stream flows into the Allerkanal and belongs to the Aller river system .

topography

The brook arises near Wedelheine and strives northwards towards Gut Martinsbüttel. On the south-eastern outskirts of Wasbüttel the Horenriede flows from the southwest. The Hehlenriede then flows about one kilometer in a northerly direction between the eastern outskirts of Wasbüttel and the Elbe Lateral Canal . In its upper course, the stream also serves as receiving water for two clarification ponds . To the south of the L292 canal bridge between Calberlah and Isenbüttel , the Edesbütteler Riede flows into the Hehlenriede. The stream bends here to the northwest and flows north past Isenbüttel towards the city of Gifhorn . At Isenbüttel, the Gravenhorster Riede is another stream that flows into the Hehlenriede. Below the village, it flows through the Fosskohli meadow area and takes up the Isenbüttel sewage treatment plant. The original stream course is interrupted on the expanded federal highway 4 , the Hehlenriede is led east of the street directly to the Allerkanal , into which it flows at the industrial park.

Before the Allerkanal was built until 1860, the creek continued through Winkel to the former confluence with the Aller at Brenneckenbrück ( Müden ). This part of the earlier stream was integrated into the canal when it was built in the 1860s. The former creek between the B4 and the Allerkanal, which does not run that straight, is listed on the official maps as Alte Hehlenriede and includes the Rötgesbütteler Riede and the Vollbütteler Riede .

Tributaries

Edesbüttel vineyard

The Edesbütteler Riede is a right tributary of the Hehlenriede with a length of 3.6 km and a catchment area of 10.44 km² and is also known under the name of Klein Brunsroder Riede (water body 14051). The stream is created east of Wettmershagen by the confluence of several small streams and drainage ditches. Sources of these streams are at Grassel , Klein Brunsrode and Essenrode . From Wettmershagen the brook flows in a westerly direction and covers between Edesbüttel and Calberlah one after the other the Mittelland Canal and twice the Elbe Lateral Canal. Then the Edesbütteler Riede flows into the Hehlenriede.

Rischmühlenriede

The Rischmühlenriede, also called Gravenhorster Riede, is a left tributary of the Hehlenriede with a length of 5.2 km and a catchment area of 15.69 km² (water body 14031). The stream originally originated south of Meine near Abbesbüttel and crossed Meine about 20 meters west of the church as a village stream. In Meine, the bathing path follows the course of the vineyard immediately north of the main road, which has been canalised below the path. After piping measures, it currently rises in a field northeast of Meine and flows in a northeast direction between Ohnhorst and Gravenhorst towards Isenbüttel. The Rischmühlenriede flows into the Hehlenriede directly at the Isenbüttel town hall.

The Rischmühlenriede was artificially deepened and straightened, especially in the upper reaches. While the stream flows through fields and green spaces in its upper course, it winds through a small deciduous forest in its lower course just before Isenbüttel. The biodiversity on the stream is very low. This is partly due to the fact that the now closed sugar factory in Meine has been draining its sewage into this stream for decades.

Flood protection

Investigations by the Technical University of Braunschweig have shown that the area is particularly at risk when it rains continuously for around 24 hours. Most recently there were floods in July 2002, January 2003 and August 2007 in the villages on the Hehlenriede and its tributaries. In response to the floods in 2002, it was decided to take measures such as the creation of additional floodplains as part of a water development plan.

Flora and fauna

The Hehlenriede is a largely developed and straightened body of water. Most of the stream runs through green areas and is only shaded by trees in a few areas. The lower course was planted with alders on the left . Their roots have now reached the bottom of the river . As is usual in the Lüneburg Heath, the bottom of the water consists of sand and fine gravel.

Running water organisms are largely absent in the Hehlenriede and its tributaries. Nevertheless, there are ten animal species that are on the Red List of Lower Saxony:

Water quality

The Lower Saxony water quality report from 2004 rated the chemical water pollution of the Hehlenriede as moderately polluted for almost the entire course (quality class II). The water quality map of the NLWKN from 2017 classifies the ecological potential as bad.
