Edyta Anna Górniak [ ɛ'dɨta 'gurɲak ] (born November 14, 1972 in Ziębice , Poland ) is a Polish singer who became known in Germany by her first name "Edyta". She is one of the few Polish artists who have managed to achieve international chart placements.

Career

Edyta Górniak was born in Ziębice, Lower Silesia , in 1972 . After singing Stop by Sam Brown on a Polish television talent show in 1989 , she got a role in the first large-scale Polish musical production Metro .

In 1994 Poland took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time and Górniak won the title To nie ja! Second. With this song she achieved her breakthrough as a pop star in Poland. Western record companies were also interested in the singer. However, her discoverer and former manager Wiktor Kubiak initially failed to persuade the singer to pursue an international career. Years later, Górniak admitted that she didn't speak a word of English at the time and that the whole thing was too insecure for her. Nevertheless, she signed a long-term exclusive contract with Kubiak, the owner of the small indie label ORCA. At the end of 1994, the Eurovision single To never appeared as Once in a Lifetime in English. The Hamburg label Edel sold the Maxi in Germany , Austria and Switzerland . Górniak had a few appearances on German-speaking television.

Shortly thereafter, Górniak recorded her debut album Dotyk ( Touch ) for the Polish EMI . The album was a huge hit and sold over 200,000 copies. In 1996 she signed a multi-album record deal with EMI International with exclusive rights to Virgin Records America. In London Górniak later recorded her first international album Edyta Górniak , which was produced by Christopher Neil , who had previously worked with Sheena Easton or Celine Dion for a number of years. Worldwide (in Asia, Africa and Europe) the album was sold around 300,000 times, but the big commercial breakthrough did not materialize, although the titles came from recognized songwriters such as Billy Steinberg , Rick Nowels or Climie Fisher .

In Germany, the single One & One was released in 1998 , which briefly hit the charts. EMI actually wanted to decouple the ballad When You Come Back to Me , then the label decided on an uptempo song. However, VIVA and MTV rejected the associated video. You could see One & One ultimately only a few times in Onyx.tv . One & One was a little more popular on the radio . In England and America the album Edyta Gorniak was not released. When You Come Back to Me reached the top 40 in Sweden and Belgium. In 1999 Górniak went on tour through Poland. Recordings of this tour were recorded on the concert album Live '99 , which contains both English and Polish songs.

At the end of 1999, work began on their second international album. EMI offered the singer the best studios in Great Britain and the USA for this . The album was originally scheduled to hit the UK market in early 2002. The artist renounced her family name Górniak for commercial reasons. Problems with her record company subsequently prevented the release as planned. Virgin Germany only released the new album in spring 2003. The material, which has meanwhile grown old, was refreshed by the disco title Impossible . The single was often on the radio at first, but it didn't even make it into the top 50 of the German single charts. Album sales also fell far short of expectations. Virgin Germany refrained from further single releases.

After the unsuccessful attempts to gain a foothold on the European music market, Górniak temporarily withdrew into family life. She became the mother of a son named Allan. She married her band musician Dariusz Krupa and bought a house in Milanowek. Before that she broke her record deal with the Polish EMI label Pomaton. In 2005 Górniak founded her own record label "EG Production".

Górniak took part in the 2007 Opole Festival with the ballad Cygańskie Serce ( Gypsy Heart ) . In the same year, the studio album EKG and the single list , a cover of the Celine Dion song I Surrender , were released.

22 years after her breakthrough at the Eurovision Song Contest , which brought Poland its best result to date, Górniak took part again in the preliminary round in her home country in 2016. In the final with Grateful, however, she only ended up in third place behind Michał Szpak and Margaret .
