The Oban Airport ( IATA code : OBN , ICAO code : EGEO ; English Oban Airport ) is about ten kilometers northeast of the town of the same name in the north west of Scotland . Earlier names were Connel Airfield and RAF Connel .

location

The airport is located in the Council Area Argyll and Bute in the area of the Community Council Area Ardchattan . To the west it borders on Ardmucknish Bay , a bulge of the Lynn of Lorne , to the south on Loch Etive . Immediately to the east of the airport is the town of North Connel , across which the A828 trunk road and the disused railway line from Connel Ferry to Ballachulish run.

history

The airport was established in 1938 in the run-up to the Second World War as a military airfield of the Royal Air Force (RAF). Under the designation RAF Connel , it served as support for the RAF Oban air force base, located opposite Obans on the island of Kerrera , where seaplanes were stationed. Aircraft of the types Hawker Henley and Bristol Blenheim were based in Connel .

Tower and reception building 2007

In 1967 the facility was taken over by the city of Oban and served as a landing pad for light aircraft and a glider airfield .

After being in the hands of the Argyll and Bute Council Area , it underwent a major overhaul by 2008. Then a regular service was started to several islands in the south and west of the Inner Hebrides . This was initially carried out by the airline Highland Airways from Inverness . After their bankruptcy in spring 2010, Hebridean Air Services, based at Cumbernauld Airport, took over the offer and expanded it. As of the end of 2016 there are connections to the airports of Colonsay , Islay , Coll and Tiree .

reachability

The A828 connects to the A82 at Ballachulish to the north and the A85 to the south beyond the Connel Bridge .

Bus routes run to Oban and Barcaldine, Appin and Duror with Westcoast Motors, from North Connel to Oban and Fort William with Citylink. Both Oban and Fort William are connected to the West Highland Line .
