Eichmanns Ende - Liebe, Verrat, Tod is a German TV docudrama by Raymond Ley from 2010.

content

Adolf Eichmann , one of the worst war criminals of the “ Third Reich ”, fled to Argentina after the Second World War . Soon afterwards he also brought his wife and three sons to join him and lived there undiscovered in the German community in Buenos Aires , which consists of Nazis and Jews, that is, of perpetrators and victims.

Eichmann gets to know the journalist Willem Sassen , a former SS officer who is still a staunch National Socialist. He is interested in Adolf Eichmann and then interviews him. Eichmann reports to him about his work as chief organizer of the deportation of Jews to the extermination camps . He shows no remorse, which horrifies even Sassen, who did not want to believe in the annihilation.

Meanwhile, Eichmann's son Klaus, called Nick, falls in love with the daughter of the concentration camp survivor Lothar Hermann . When his daughter Silvia introduces Nick Eichmann to him, a conversation ensues, through which Hermann guesses who the father of the young man is. He then notifies the Hessian public prosecutor Fritz Bauer . In this case, however, Bauer does not want to rely on the German judiciary and notifies the government of Israel, which Eichmann then kidnaps from Argentina and then takes him to court in Israel.

background

Eichmanns Ende was produced by doc.station GmbH (Hamburg) for ARD . The film first aired on July 25, 2010 in the program of the First . For Herbert Knaup it was the third time that he played a member of the Nazi regime, after he played Adolf Hitler on the theater stage in 1990 and Albert Speer in the US miniseries Nuremberg - In the Name of Humanity in 2000 .

criticism

"Gripping docu-drama with historical images, reports from contemporary witnesses and top-class play scenes."

"Eichmanns Ende" stands under the sign of the "banality of evil", that explanatory model with which Arendt described the atrocities of Nazi functionary Eichmann, born out of normality, which are not based on any pathological motives, at best the German secondary virtues. At the heart of Raymond Ley's film are the tape recordings from the 1950s, in which the journalist Willem Sassen interviews the ice-cold deportation logistician for a book intended to encourage the “old comrades” back home. Powerful and sensual docu-drama: skillfully assembled, well played, exciting. "

- Rainer Tittelbach : tittelbach.tv

“Of course it was easier for Knaup than his predecessors: The original wording of the interview is available in full [...]. Nevertheless, Knaup's performance, in addition to the convincingly condensed script of the game scenes, remains the film's strength. Which of course also has some weaknesses. Ulrich Tukur, who plays great as usual, gets too sympathetic to the actually highly ambivalent character of Willem Sassen. Cornelia Kempers could have made more of the role of Vera Eichmann. The eyewitness interviews are irrelevant; mostly they are second-hand 'memories'. Because the main participants in Eichmann's end , his son Nick and Silvia Hermann, do not want to comment 50 years later. "

“In this area of tension between Nazi hunter crime and Nazi language analysis, Eichmann's end achieves an enormous narrative density. [...] This film demands something from its viewers. Because the thousandfold illuminated figure of Adolf Eichmann, who often looked frighteningly harmless with its technocratic grimace - here it suddenly wakes up to monstrous life. "

The FAZ, on the other hand, sharply criticized the film with the following wording:

"[...] perhaps one shouldn't get angry about the fact that the ARD feels compelled, even the story of one of the most terrible criminals of all time, who has been an anthropological riddle before the eyes of mankind since his first word to the judges, melodramatic to wrap. [...] In the conversations with Sassen, the script follows the wording of the tapes. In contrast, the Hermanns' family drama is made up of a television film fantasy. The daughter gives no information. Isn't it possible to respect the fact that a woman who once had to make a decision with historical consequences has withdrawn into private life? Only the murderers dragged the Hermanns into the story, and when you hear from neighbors that Lothar Hermann was obsessed with a thirst for vengeance, then in the context of a thriller dramaturgy that makes him Eichmann's opponent, it seems disproportionate and indecent. "

Liliana Hermann , niece of Silvia Hermann, further explained:

“[...] my aunt Silvia [did not] have a love affair with Klaus Eichmann [...]. She was 12 in 1954 when she lived in the neighborhood of the Eichmann family and before she moved to Coronel Suárez that year, Klaus Eichmann was 18 years old. She knew Klaus from the neighborhood, both lived in Olivos (in the province of Buenos Aires). Many (former) Nazi criminals lived in Olivos without having to hide their identities [...] That was anything but a secret, the Argentine Jewish community knew about it too. [...] Eichmann was not allowed to go unpunished, and so Lothar reported him to the Delegación de Asociaciones Israelitas Argentina [...] and later to the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires as early as 1954, who showed no interest. Because of these interventions, Lothar and his family even had to flee to Coronel Suárez (also in the province of Buenos Aires) in 1954, from where he finally got in touch with Fritz Bauer and Tuviah Friedmann. "

- Liliana Hermann / Linda Erker : newspaper of the GEDENKDIENST association

Liliana Hermann also described in a documentary by Gaby Weber published on Youtube in 2015 how she approached her previously unknown aunt Silvia at a personal meeting about the NDR docudrama and the alleged love story: "Silvia said she was old and had her family suffered so many injustices that she did not want to say anything about it. She described the docudrama as insulting. She had no relationship with me in her 12 years, especially no sex. " Liliana Hermann also pointed out here that Lothar Hermann was not sufficiently appreciated. Weber's documentation also criticizes the ARD docudrama for the fact that dialogue scenes are partly not verifiable and presumably fictitious, while comprehensive authenticity is suggested.
