Elīna Garanča (born September 16, 1976 in Riga , then Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic ) is a Latvian opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ).

Life

Elīna Garanča comes from a family of musicians, the father is a choir conductor, the mother Anita Garanča was a professor of singing at the Music Academy in Riga and vocal teacher at the Latvian National Opera in Riga. Garanča was originally interested in musicals , but after finishing school she decided to study opera (model: Joan Sutherland ). Garanča studied singing at the Latvian Music Academy with her mother and Sergej Martinov , then in the USA, in Amsterdam and in Vienna (with Irina Gavrilovici ). She has two children with her husband Karel Mark Chichon . Elīna Garanča speaks excellent German since she started her studies at the State Theater in Meiningen in 1998 .

Career

Garanča had her first engagements in Bucharest and Athens at the age of 21 . She came to the Vienna State Opera via the opera houses in Meiningen and Frankfurt am Main and made her debut as Lola in Cavalleria rusticana . When she won the International Mirjam Helin Singing Competition in Finland in 1999, the opera world became aware of the mezzo-soprano. Joan Sutherland, who was a member of the jury, spoke of a "brilliant voice" and the "appearance of a born diva". The international breakthrough came with the otherwise little-noticed part of Annio in Mozart's La clemenza di Tito at the Salzburg Festival in 2003 (conductor: Nikolaus Harnoncourt , director: Martin Kušej ). In 2004 she made her debut at the Vienna State Opera as Charlotte in Werther and as Dorabella in Così fan tutte . She could also be heard as Dorabella in 2005 at the Paris Opéra Bastille in the production of Patrice Chéreau . She made her debut at Covent Garden Opera in London with Così fan tutte in July 2007. In October 2007 she appeared on stage for the first time as Carmen in Riga, with her husband Karel Mark Chichon conducting . In January 2008 the debut followed and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York with Rosina in The Barber of Seville . There she took over the role of Sesto in La clemenza di Tito in the 2012/13 season . Her repertoire includes songs by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, de Falla, Berg, Sibelius and Strauss as well as sacred works by u. a. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi and Rossini. In March 2011, at the opening of the Vienna Opera Ball , she sang the aria Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix from the opera Samson et Dalila by Camille Saint-Saëns . Her involvement with Klassik unter Sternen in front of the Göttweig Abbey in Lower Austria , which takes place every year at the beginning of July as an open-air concert, has been traditional since 2008 .

Music recordings and media

In 2005 Garanča released a CD of arias with works by Mozart with Virgin Classics , which was awarded the Editor's choice in Gramophone . She has been under contract with Deutsche Grammophon since 2006 . Garanča has hosted the late night show Arte Lounge at ARTE since November 2010 .
