Elisabeth Gössmann

Maria Elisabeth Gössmann (born Placke ; born June 21, 1928 in Osnabrück ; † May 1, 2019 in Munich ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian and prominent representative of feminist theology within the Roman Catholic Church . She saw herself as a representative of "historical women's research in theology".

Life

After graduating from high school in 1947, Elisabeth Gössmann studied Catholic theology, philosophy and German studies in Münster and passed her state examination in 1952 . In Munich she studied with Michael Schmaus . She was more interested in "the alternative", namely in the theological designs of early scholasticism and more in the Franciscan than the Dominican line. In 1954 she did her doctorate there (at the same time with her fellow students Joseph Ratzinger and Uta Ranke-Heinemann ). Until 1954 there had been no doctorates in Catholic theology for women in Germany.

She first worked in Japan , first as a lecturer in German literature of the Middle Ages at the church Sophia University in Tokyo , then as a lecturer in Christian philosophy at the Seishin Women's University, which is associated with the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Japanese Seishinkai ) . There she taught as a professor in Japanese since 1968 . Since 1986 she has been teaching in Germany, Austria and Switzerland .

Her first attempt at habilitation failed in 1963 because of an objection from the German Bishops' Conference : laypeople should not be made professors. In 1978 she made her second attempt at habilitation, this time in philosophy with Eugen Biser . Despite applying 37 times, she was not given a chair in Germany and was only able to take up an extraordinary professorship in Munich in 1990 .

She was married to the literary scholar Wilhelm Gössmann from 1954 until his death in January 2019 and had two daughters and two grandchildren. Elisabeth Gössmann died after a long illness in early May 2019 at the age of 90 in Munich.
