Eltmannshausen is a district of Eschwege in the Werra-Meißner district in Hesse .

Eltmannshausen is located west of Eschwege in northern Hesse . In the east, the Bebra – Göttingen railway line , built in 1876, and federal road 27 pass the town.

history

The place name is derived from the personal name Eltwin . The first documented mention of the name Eltwinshusen dates back to 1073. Archaeological finds from the time of the band ceramics, however, show settlement at a much earlier point in time. The church was built in 1519 on the site of a previous church. The settlement of Hetterode existed to the west of the village until the Thirty Years War . She fell wildly.

In 1939 the place had 706 inhabitants. Even then, Eltmannshausen was part of the Eschwege district court and tax office. On April 1, 1972, the previously independent place was incorporated into the district town of Eschwege.

Culture and sights

The Protestant Church

The Protestant church of Eltmannshausen is a late Gothic building from 1519. In 1697 the nave was enlarged by demolishing the choir . Later, in 1781, it was converted into a simple hall church with a gable roof turret and three-sided galleries . In the church there is a three-winged organ built in 1890 by organ builder Heinrich Möller (Rotenburg) in baroque form .

The church stands on a ridge above the village and is surrounded by the cemetery, on which a memorial place for the dead of the two world wars was built. In front of the cemetery a fairground with a linden tree was created. The church is a cultural monument because of its historical importance.

For the other cultural monuments of the place under monument protection see the list of cultural monuments in Eltmannshausen .
