Elyria is a city in the north of the US state Ohio , not far from the south bank of Lake Erie on the Black River and 38 km west-southwest of Cleveland . It is the administrative seat ( county seat ) of Lorain County and belongs to the metropolitan area Cleveland- Lorain -Elyria. At the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 54,533.

history

Elyria was founded in 1817 by Herman Ely in northeast Ohio at the fork of the Black River . The current Mayor of Elyria is Holly Brinda.

education

The city is the seat of the Lorain County Community College . In addition to Elyria High School and Westwood and Northwood Junior High School , there are nine elementary schools and the Eastern Heights Middle School in the city. There are also denominational private schools such as Elyria Catholic High School , Open Door Christian Schools High, and First Baptist Christian High School .
