The Embser Mühlengraben is about 15 kilometers long, left tributary of the Wümme . It flows into the Wümme southern arm in Fischerhude .

course

The Embser Mühlengraben rises in a spring moor east of the Achim district of Borstel . It initially runs in a south-westerly direction before changing its direction to the north-west south of Borstel. On the northern edge of Embsen , the ditch below Laheit, which runs predominantly in a westerly direction, which is sometimes also referred to as the Borstel-Laheiter Abzuggraben, is dammed up to form a former mill pond. It leaves this to the south and then runs a section of the piped section to the west in the south of Embsen. On the outskirts of Embsen the Mühlengraben reappears and now runs relatively straight in the direction of Autobahn 27 , which it then follows largely parallel to the northwest. At the Bremer Kreuz , it passes the Oyter See and then crosses under Autobahn 1 . It then follows the course of the Autobahn 27 in a northerly direction and shortly afterwards crosses the state border to Bremen, before it first crosses the Bremen freight bypass and a little later the state road 168 at the Bremen-Sebaldsbrück junction. At the Bultensee the ditch runs between the lake and the motorway. From the confluence of the Embser Mühlengraben with the Osterholzer Sielgraben a little below the Bultensee, the Embser Mühlengraben is also known as the Deichschloot. Shortly afterwards it follows the Osterholz dike, which merges into the Hodenberger dike, and changes its direction to the north. At the edge of the Bremen district of Oberneuland , it crosses under the Bremen – Hamburg railway line and then runs parallel to the Hodenberger Deich to the weir on the southern edge of the “ Borgfelder Wümmewiesennature reserve . Below the weir it runs about 250 meters to the northeast and forms the border of the nature reserve “Borgfelder Wümmewiesen” before it crosses the state border to Lower Saxony and enters the nature reserve “ Fischerhuder Wümmeniederung ”. Shortly afterwards it joins the Wümme southern arm from the left.

description

The Embser Mühlengraben initially flows through agricultural land used as grassland before flowing through a wooded area east of Borstel. As far as Embser, the ditch then flows through predominantly arable land, in which it is accompanied in places by wood. Below Embser, it runs largely unshaded through agricultural areas. It is accompanied here by a narrow strip of water. From the Oyter See to the Bultensee, the Embser Mühlengraben is again largely accompanied by trees. Along the Hodenberger dike then alternate between wooded and unshaded sections. The areas adjacent to the watercourse are farmed as grassland or arable land. In its course, numerous ditches serving to drain the agricultural areas flow towards the Embser Mühlengraben. A little below the Bultensee, the Osterholzer Sielgraben, which absorbs rainwater from the Ellenerbrok-Schevemoor district of the Osterholz district of Bremen , flows into the Embser Mühlengraben via a sluice structure. In addition to drainage, the Embser Mühlengraben is also used for irrigation. In Bremen, for example, water is taken from it to supply the Holler Fleet and Oberneulander Park.

The Embser Mühlengraben has been straightened almost over its entire course. In the area and slightly above the Bultensee, three contiguous sections of the Embser Mühlengraben have been renatured . Beginning with the section between Bultensee and the motorway, the bank reinforcement on the eastern side of the trench was removed, the bank was flattened and two loops were created. On the renaturation area adjacent to the south, the course of the trench was changed by creating loops. The previous main run was interrupted so that an oxbow lake could develop. Sturgeon stones were introduced into the course of the water to improve the structure and increase the dynamics . On another renaturation area, which adjoins it to the south, the course of the water was relocated to a length of about 200 meters and the previous main course was interrupted. Along the Embser Mühlengraben, alders grow in the area of the renaturation areas. Parts of the area are occupied by reed beds , and tall herbaceous meadows and sedge beds have also formed.

The renaturation measures were supported with funds from the Manfred Hermsen Foundation and the Berninghausen Foundation.

In Bremen, a section of the Embser Mühlengraben on the Osterholzer Deich and the Hodenberger Deich is used as fishing waters.
