Ernst JM Helmreich (born July 1, 1922 in Munich ; † February 4, 2017 ) was a German biochemist .

Life

Helmreich studied medicine and organic chemistry in Munich . In 1949 he received his doctorate in medicine. He completed his habilitation with a thesis on the metabolism of fructose . In 1954 Helmreich went to Carl and Gerty Cori at Washington University in St. Louis , where he later received a professorship. In 1967 he had a sabbatical with Manfred Eigen . In 1968 Helmreich received a call to the chair of physiological chemistry at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg , where he retired in 1990 . This was followed by research stays with Thomas Jovin at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen (1990) and at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda , Maryland (1993/1994).

Act

Helmreich has worked on numerous biochemical topics, including the mechanism of action of cardiac glycosides , the relationship between fat and sugar metabolism , the mechanism of action of insulin , the synthesis and secretion of antibodies in living cells, membrane transport , the role of pyridoxal phosphate in phosphorylase kinase , the Role of G proteins and beta adrenoceptors and the synthesis and in situ localization of fluorescent molecules.

Similar to the cross-faculty research and teaching program for molecular biology at Washington University in St. Louis, which he helped to create, Helmreich also developed and implemented the concept of a biocenter from 1968 to 1993 in Würzburg - against resistance from colleagues who were traditionally rooted there. Helmreich and his Würzburg Institute are now considered to be formative for post-war biochemical research in Germany. During the division of Germany, he kept in touch with researchers from the GDR and played an important role in the restructuring of East German life sciences after 1989.
