Ernst Jakob Danovius

Ernst Jakob Danovius also: Danov (* March 12, 1741 in Redlau ; † March 18, 1782 in Jena ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Ernst Jakob was born as the eldest son of the pastor in Redlau and later pastor in Thorn Ludwig Danovius (* September 1711 Eckersberg / Prussia; † February 16, 1771 in Thorn) and his wife Anna Eleonora Gerschner (* Königsberg). He received his first education from his father and at the age of fifteen he entered the Academic Gymnasium in Gdansk . Here he enjoyed the training of teachers such as Ernst August Bertling , Gottlieb Wernsdorf , Benjamin Groddeck (* September 27, 1720 in Danzig, † June 5, 1776 in Danzig), Christian Sendel (* December 12, 1719 in Elblag; † May 25 1789 in Danzig) and Heinrich Kühn (born November 19, 1690 in Königsberg / Pr. † August 6, 1769 in Danzig).

In 1760 he began to study theology at the University of Helmstedt . To this end, he attended lectures at the philosophical faculty with Franz Dominikus Häberlin , Johann Jacob Hentsch (born January 24, 1723 in Bautzen, † July 15, 1764 in Helmstädt) and Johann Wolfgang Kipping . His theological knowledge shaped Johann Ernst Schubert , Anton Julius von der Hardt (born November 13, 1707 in Braunschweig, † June 27, 1785 in Helmstedt), Wilhelm Abraham Teller and Johann Benedikt Carpzov . In 1763 he continued his studies at the University of Göttingen , where Johann David Michaelis , Christian Wilhelm Franz Walch , Johann David Heilmann , Gottfried Less , Samuel Christian Hollmann and Abraham Gotthelf Kästner became his teachers. In 1765 he followed Johann Ernst Schubert to Greifswald , where he made a living as a tutor of his children and through private lectures. After he had acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy in Greifswald, he became rector of the Johannisschule in Danzig in 1766 .

Through Bertling's recommendation, he received an honorary professorship in theology at the University of Jena in September 1768 . After he had defended his inaugural treatise de Episcopis aetate Apostolorum on June 8, 1774 , he received his doctorate in theology and on June 27 of the same year was given a full professorship in theology in Jena. As such, he gave lectures on exegesis, dogmatics, symbolism and morality. In 1774 he became a church councilor of Saxe-Gotha and inspector of the Gotha and Altenburg students. In addition, he participated in the organizational tasks of the university. He was dean of the theological faculty and in the winter semesters 1774 and 1778 rector of the alma mater . In a fit of choleric melancholy, he threw himself into the hall and drowned.

Danovius is one of the Lutheran theologians who, through his supranaturalist conception of a natural religion, took a free, enlightened standpoint. He got into a literary argument about the doctrine of justification with the Erlangen theologian Georg Friedrich Seiler (* October 24, 1733 in Creußen; † May 13, 1807 in Erlangen). He also campaigned for religious association with the Reformed Church. Though his students praised the liveliness, clarity, and thoughtfulness of his lectures, his style of writing seems clumsy and artificial.

Danovius was married to Henrietta Wilhelmina Sophia Eberhardina Eber (* 1755 in Jena), the daughter of the princely Thurn und Taxischer Hofrats, councilor of Saxony-Coburg and imperial postmaster in Jena Christoph Ludwig Eber (* 1713 - 13 January 1785 in Jena) who was married to Paulina Regina Sophia, the daughter of a mayor of Deizisau near Weimar. The marriage remained childless.
