Erwin Lademann

Erwin Lademann (born April 13, 1923 in Wittenberge ; † February 20, 2015 in Crivitz ) was a German writer and journalist in the GDR .

Life

He was born in 1923 as the son of the worker Richard Lademann in Wittenberge ( Westprignitz ). After attending primary school, he completed a commercial apprenticeship in 1941 and was drafted into the Navy . After the end of the war, he lived in Bremen from 1945 to 1950 and worked as a worker and employee in the construction industry . During this time he made his first literary attempts. At the beginning of 1951 Lademann moved to the GDR and worked as a sales point manager in Wittstock / Dosse . In October 1951 he was invited by the writer Erwin Strittmatter to the Potsdam Working Group of Young Authors , which helped him to publish his first poems and short stories . In the same year he read a chapter from his draft novel about the struggle of the Bremen port workers . This resulted in his debut novel Opens the Gates in 1953 , which initially appeared in sequels as a preprint in the Ostsee-Zeitung in Rostock . Lademann then worked as an art teacher in the Perleberg House of Young Pioneers and in 1953 in the Perleberg consumer cooperative and studied for two years until 1956 at the "Johannes R. Becher" Institute for Literature in Leipzig , where he learned literary historical contexts and Marxist interpretations.

In 1959 Lademann took part as a delegate at the first Bitterfeld conference . This was followed by several years of journalistic work as the district editor of the Schweriner Volkszeitung in Wittenberge, where he promoted the agricultural production cooperatives together with senior officials in front of the local farmers until the spring of 1960 . This activity also gave him the opportunity to gather material for planned novels. The SED nominated its party member Lademann as a member of the district council , in which he then acted as chairman of the culture commission. From 1965 he also worked as district chairman and party secretary in the German Writers' Association in Schwerin . In 1969, as a member of the culture commission, he committed himself to work in the “Cooperation Plate”, a training community of numerous LPGs and businesses in the region.

As a television critic , Lademann was also responsible for a section called “With you Erwin Lademann saw” in the Schweriner Volkszeitung .

He died on February 20, 2015 in Crivitz.

Style and reception

Lademann's books were referred to in the GDR as “ socialist national literature” or “socialist homeland literature”. Lademann cited the reading of Maxim Gorki's Die Mutter as the trigger for his writing activity . In addition to his mentor Erwin Strittmatter, he repeatedly named Lion Feuchtwanger as a role model , whose “spelling” and “beautiful, comprehensive view of historical events” he admires.

Open the gates is about the strike of the Bremen dock workers and showmen in 1951. The weak figure drawings in the novel were criticized. The one protagonist is "[e] in the hero of the retort, a 'scheme'", the other changes "without constant inner struggles [...] overnight". This seems incredible. In addition, Lademann does not meet the authentic language of the Bremen workforce. For all these reasons, the work has more of a reportage character or is a series of scenes.

In Two girls and a young man is about a sales manager who would like to make that clerk to his beloved, who proves to be the larger sales talent. This time the figure drawing is "lively and vivid", although here too there are doubts about the credibility of the bizarre "love competition". The language is "loose and concise, if sometimes not short enough". Since direct speech is used almost exclusively , the reader has no clues for important and less important passages. All in all, it is a "cheerful story" and evidence of literary advancement.

The love of the Haberlands deals with a father-son conflict in 1958, at the time of the expropriations of farmers and the establishment of LPGs. Lademann's style of language was criticized on the one hand: It was said to be pompous. This was countered by the fact that the expression was rich in images and popular. One reviewer said that Lademann relies on the "sensuality of everyday language ". The opinion of Neues Deutschland reviewer Leonore Krenzlin that the motives for the young protagonist's behavior were not clearly worked out, and that everyday life at LPG was only described superficially, was largely not shared. One conclusion was that the combination of the described village life and warm language turned it into a “real home book”.
