Escada is a city with a good 60,000 inhabitants in the Brazilian state and former captaincy of Pernambuco in the northeast of the country.
geography
The place is about 60 kilometers southwest of the capital of the state of Recife and about 40 kilometers northeast of the bishopric Palmares in the former rainforest area and UNESCO - Mata Atlântica biosphere reserve . The Ipojuca River , considered to be one of the dirtiest rivers in Brazil, crosses the municipality and, in a tropical climate, is fed by abundant winter rain, especially in May and June. The red clay soil favors the cultivation of sugar cane, the main economic activity of Escada. There are some natural attractions such as waterfalls and rapids in undulating terrain.
history
Even before proselytizing in 1685, tribes of the Potyguara , Tabujaré and Mariquito settled here . They were asked to build a chapel for Nossa Senhora da Apresentação on a hill. In order to make the ascent easier, a staircase was needed that led to the current name Escada (translated: ladder ), which has been used since 1757. In 1773 the place was briefly wiped out before it was re-established as a new parish in 1786 and expanded in 1813. In 1854 Escada received the status of a municipality and in 1873 that of a town. The district of Frexeiras has been run as a separate city district since 1911.
