European Championship of Bohemian-Moravian Brass Music

The European Championship of Bohemian-Moravian Brass Music is a music competition that took place in Maihingen for the first time in 2000 . The Confédération Internationale des Sociétés Musicales is in charge of the competition . The competition takes place in a different location in Europe every year.

Eligibility requirements

Every European band is allowed to take part in a Bohemian-Moravian line-up. The total size of the orchestra must not exceed 25 musicians.

The performing musicians are active members of the registered orchestra. Only professional musicians who can be shown to have been members of the orchestra in question before their professional career are allowed to play in the lower, middle and upper grades. Brass bands that play with other professional musicians must compete at the highest level.

Power levels

The following performance levels apply to the competition of orchestras and ensembles of the Bohemian-Moravian style:

  • Highest level - Highest level of artistic requirements
  • Upper level - second highest level of artistic requirements
  • Intermediate - Intermediate level of artistic requirements
  • Lower level - lower level of artistic requirements

Songs / track selection

In addition to a compulsory piece, two compulsory elective pieces and two self-elective pieces from the same level of difficulty within the given time limit of 20-25 minutes (plus 3-minute break-in time) must be performed.

The evaluation is carried out by three jurors (experts) recognized by the Confédération Internationale des Sociétés Musicales. The evaluation takes place covertly and immediately after the completion of the performed compositions. A play-in piece can be played on the stage before the competition lecture, which must be reported to the organizer for moderation when registering at the competition venue. The play-in is not included in the rating.

The presentations are assessed according to the following criteria:

  • Tuning and intonation
  • Tone and sound quality
  • Phrasing and articulation
  • Technical execution
  • Rhythm and metric
  • Dynamic differentiations
  • Tempo and agogic
  • Sound equalization and register balance
  • Musical expression
  • Interpretation and style

The jurors award a maximum of 10 points per criterion:

  • 10 = excellent
  • 9 = very good
  • 8 = good
  • 7 = satisfactory
  • 6 = participated 5
  • Half values ​​can also be assigned (x, 5)

After the competitions of the European Championship have ended, a ranking list will be drawn up showing the winners and the further order of the orchestras. The ranking results from the points achieved. In the event of a tie, the compulsory piece is decisive. In each performance level, 1 title "European Champion" is awarded, however, the achievement of at least

  • 92 points in the maximum level
  • 91 points in the advanced level
  • 90 points in the intermediate level
  • 88 points in the lower level

required. If none of the participating orchestras achieve the required number of points for the title “European Champion” in a performance level, there is a class winner for the highest number of points achieved, but without the title “European Master”. If the respective runner-up has also exceeded the respective point limit, he can call himself “Vice European Champion”.
