Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna is the only one of its kind in Austria. Its history reflects the fate and history of Protestantism in the former Habsburg lands and in what is now Austria. In 1922, the Evangelical Theological Institute, founded by decree of the Studienhofkommission in 1819, was incorporated into the university association as an independent faculty.

The Evangelical Theological Faculty has the special responsibility and duty to represent the entire field of theology from the Protestant cultural and scientific tradition in research and teaching and to keep alive the historical memory of its own Protestant tradition.

The faculty is aware of the following principles and goals in research and teaching:

  • The principle of evangelical freedom and the humane freedom postulates, in particular freedom in research and teaching and the freedom of learners and respect for them;
  • responsibility for a humane society;
  • respect for the conviction of others, the principle of dialogue and diversity of opinion;
  • respect for human dignity, in particular equal treatment of women and men as well as people of different social origins and the integration of disabled people;
  • As part of a religious minority in Austria and against the background of its own history, the Evangelical-Theological Faculty pays special attention to the concerns and respect of other religious and social minorities.
