The FIA -Langstrecken World Cup (officially FIA World Endurance Championship , shortly WEC ) is a from the Automobile Club de l'Ouest organized long-distance racing series for sports prototypes and Gran Turismos , according to the rules and guidelines which since 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans will be held.

The Championship

The racing series emerged from the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup , which the FIA granted official World Championship status from 2012. In the prototype class, Audi with the R18 and Toyota with the TS030, two manufacturers with their own factory teams, entered the LMP1 , the highest class. In 2014, Porsche entered series production in LMP1 with the Porsche 919 Hybrid , Nissan planned to participate in 2015 with the Nissan GT-R LM Nismo , but it was only used in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. At the end of 2016, Audi announced the immediate exit from the series. A year later, Porsche also decided to withdraw from the WEC.

Toyota ( Toyota TS050 Hybrid ) is currently the only remaining works team in the LMP1. Vehicles from the makes Aston Martin ( Aston Martin V8 Vantage ), BMW ( BMW M8 GTE ), Chevrolet ( Chevrolet Corvette C7.R ), Ferrari ( Ferrari 488 GTE ), Ford ( Ford GT ) and Porsche compete in the GTE Pro and GTE Am ( Porsche 911 RSR ). Since the 2017 season, only four different chassis from the manufacturers Dallara , Onroak Automotive , Oreca and Riley Tech / Multimatic in connection with a standard engine from Gibson Technology have been allowed in the LMP2 .

The titles in the endurance world championship are awarded to pilots in all classes, constructors only in classes LMP1 and GTE.

Sporting regulations

Since 2013, the Gran Turismo vehicles and the Le Mans prototypes have been driving two different qualification sessions, each lasting 25 minutes. Each team must nominate two drivers who each complete two timed laps on the same set of tires. An average is calculated from the four timed laps, which determines the starting order of the vehicles.
