Familien-Gang (Original title: Roommates ) is a tragic comedy by Peter Yates from 1995.

action

Pittsburgh , 1963: After the parents of six-year-old Michael Holzcek died, his relatives wanted him to go to an orphanage . Only his grandfather Rocky, a 75-year-old baker of Polish descent , refuses to allow that and adopts his nephew without further ado.

Contrary to the family's concerns, the agile old man manages to raise the child well. After completing school, Michael starts studying medicine in Columbus , where he shares an apartment with six fellow students of Chinese origin. His independent life gets out of hand when the house of his now almost 100-year-old grandfather is about to be demolished, but he refuses to move out. Michael finally persuades Rocky to move in with him in his shared apartment, where, contrary to all expectations, he gets along well with the other roommates.

Michael falls in love with Beth, who, however, meets with strict rejection by Rocky. Nevertheless, the two marry, have two children and finally move back to Pittsburgh, where Michael, who has now completed his training as a doctor, settles down. In Columbus, Rocky, now well over 100 years old and still working as a baker, fell ill, whereupon he too returned to Pittsburgh and moved in with his family. In the following years, the relationship with Beth improved, while Michael made a career as a doctor. When Beth is killed in a traffic accident, it's up to Rocky to help his family one last time. He eventually dies at the biblical age of 107.

background

The character of Rocky ages by 30 years during the film. The artist Colleen Callaghan , Greg Cannom and Robert Laden were in 1996 for the Oscar in the category Best Makeup and Best hairstyles nominated.

criticism

"As a film, a one-dimensional, lukewarm imitation of once successful comedic melodramas."
