Ferdinand Nebel
Ferdinand Jakob Nebel (born March 22, 1782 in Koblenz ; † April 20, 1860 there ) was an architect active in the southern Rhine province .
Life
He was the son of the haberdashery trader Johann Nikolaus Nebel (1752-1829), who was Mayor of Koblenz from 1804 to 1808 . He studied construction and metallurgy in Berlin and then went on study trips for several years, including to Paris . After that he worked in the fortress construction in Mainz and from 1818 in Koblenz. In 1823 he became agricultural inspector for six districts of the Koblenz administrative district and supervised all construction projects for which the Prussian state was the client. In his work he was in constant competition with his architect colleague Johann Claudius von Lassaulx . He was the father of the Koblenz architect and master builder Hermann Nebel (1816–1893).
The process of manufacturing lightweight building blocks from pumice goes back to Ferdinand Nebel by adding lime milk to the ground pumice . These so-called alluvial stones are relatively light, quick to work with and have good thermal insulation properties. The discovery of fog in 1845 was the basis for the important building materials industry in the Neuwied Basin . After the Second World War, the proportion of alluvial stones was at times 40 percent of total German building block production.
