Filiberto Rivera (born September 28, 1982 in Hato Rey , Río Piedras ) is a Puerto Rican basketball player . After studying in the United States , Rivera played professionally alongside engagements in his home country, initially in Europe in particular . For his home country, Rivera participated in the 2006 and 2010 World Basketball Championships . He started his European career in 2005 with the German first division club Artland Dragons, with whom he was runner-up in 2007 and reached the cup final, and in addition to engagements in Italy , Greece and Israel, he also played in the 2008/09 BBL season for league competitor Brose Baskets from Bamberg . After playing only in Latin America for five years , he returned to Germany for the 2016/17 BBL season to play for the newly promoted Science City Jena.

Career

After previously serving in the home league Baloncesto Superior Nacional , Rivera began studying in the United States in 2001. He first studied at the Southeastern Community College in Iowa . At this junior college he was active for the Blackhawks college team in the National Junior College Athletic Association, with whom he won the 2003 division I national championship. After two years he moved to the University of Texas at El Paso and played for the Miners in the Conference USA of the NCAA . The Miners are historically an important team of the NCAA, as they won their only NCAA Division I basketball championship in 1966 during a high phase of the Civil Rights Movement for the first time with a starting five consisting of only colored players. With the Miners Rivera was able to qualify for the national finals, but where they were eliminated in the first round. Despite his only two-year college career with the Miners, Rivera ranks fourth in assists on the Miners' all-time leaderboard and has the most assists per game per game.

In 2005, after completing his studies, he moved to the Artland Dragons in the German basketball division. With this team he was able to qualify for the play-offs for the German championship in 2006 and 2007 . Eliminated in the first round in 2006, they beat Alba Berlin , who won the main round in 2007, and made it to the final, where they lost to the Brose Baskets. They were also runner-up in the German cup competition after losing to RheinEnergie Köln in the final , after they had been eliminated in the semifinals the year before. In the following season 2007/08 Rivera played to December in Italian Naples and then in the Greek A1 Ethniki AEK in Athens . In 2008 he returned to the German BBL and played for the Brose Baskets. After they had only just reached the play-offs, they were eliminated in the semi-final series against the eventual champions EWE Baskets Oldenburg . Rivera, who was active in the home league BSN in the summer months during his studies, initially only played in the BSN. In the 2010/11 season he was again active overseas in the Israeli Ligat ha'Al . In 2016 he moved to Germany again, this time to the newly promoted Science City Jena , where his contract was terminated after just a few months.

National team

After Rivera previously played in the youth and junior selection teams of his home country, he had been active for the men's national team in various competitions since 2004, although he was not yet part of the Puerto Rico squad at the 2004 Olympics and later at the Olympic Games due to the lack of athletic qualifications in the national team did not participate. At the basketball world championships in 2006 and 2010, the selection was eliminated twice in the first group phase, since in a three-way comparison , China had to go first even though they had been defeated in a direct comparison. At the FIBA American Championships in 2007 Rivera won the bronze medal with Puerto Rico in the USA and the silver medal in 2009 in his home country.
