Five Nights at Freddy's 2 (German about: Five Nights at Freddy's 2 ; often with FNAF 2 or FNaF-2 for short) is an indie - survival horror game and the sequel to Five Nights at Freddy's . It was conceived by Scott Cawthon and first published on the Internet sales platform Desura on November 11 , 2014. Versions of the game have been developed for Windows , iOS , Android , Windows Phone, and Linux . On March 2, 2015 the third part Five Nights at Freddy's 3 came out and on June 23, 2015 the fourth part Five Nights at Freddy's 4, described as the final chapter, followed . On October 31, 2019, Five Nights at Freddys 2 was updated.

The point-and-click game is about a fictional pizzeria in which eleven animatronics become independent at night and threaten the night watchman who works there . The player takes control of this night watchman. The nights last 6 hours each (a few minutes in real time). During this time, the animatronics come to life and set course for the guard's office. Since it is not possible to leave the room, the animatronics can be kept in view via the surveillance cameras distributed in the restaurant . The movement of the figures becomes more unpredictable from night to night; their number is also steadily increasing. If the player is caught by an animatronic in his office, this is acknowledged with a jumpscare . If the player survives five nights, he receives a fictitious pay check .

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 was originally supposed to be released around mid-January 2015. At the beginning of November 2014 a demo version of the game was released with only two nights. Selected YouTubers got a three-night version. Since these versions attracted a lot of attention after a short time and also ran without errors, the release date was brought forward. Like its predecessor, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is mostly positively rated.

action

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is plot-wise a prequel . The events told here take place chronologically before the events from the first part.

The player takes on the role of Jeremy Fitzgerald , who accepted a job as a night watchman at the recently reopened pizzeria Freddy Fazbear's Pizza via a newspaper advertisement . On the first night he received a call with a recorded message from a stranger known as the phone guy .

The caller greets Fitzgerald and tells him about the animatronics. These are supposed to become independent at night, walk through the pizzeria and persistently go to the night watchman's office. He explains this by saying that they are programmed to follow noises that only come from the office at night. In addition, the animatronics are equipped with the latest facial recognition software, which, for example, can recognize wanted criminals and report them immediately via police radio. The animatronic software was also programmed so that no one was allowed to be present after the shop had closed. It is therefore conceivable that the animatronics consider the guard to be an unadorned endoskeleton , which could tempt them to force him into one of the replacement costumes. This could lead to the death of the victim. Therefore, Fitzgerald is given a Freddy Fazbear mask to fool the animatronics. In one of the rooms there is also a music box that has to be wound up again and again in order to distract and "keep" a certain animatronic.

On each of the following nights, with the exception of the seventh, the phone rings again, each time an announcement sounds. Phone Guy shares in these recordings what is currently going on in the pizzeria during the day. On the fourth night, he reports that the animatronics began to "behave strangely" by being sociable and happy with children, while "just staring at every adult and not moving". A police investigation has been launched against the company and the pizzeria may be temporarily closed. On the fifth night, Phone Guy confirms the closing of the place. During this time nobody, especially no “former employees”, is allowed to enter the shop. Phone Guy also informs Fitzgerald that he may soon be working the day shift as there is now a vacancy there.

On the sixth night, the caller sounds downright baffled that Fitzgerald has returned for the night shift. He reports that a yellow replacement costume had been stolen and worn without permission and that the animatronics would now "no longer work properly at all". He asks Fitzgerald to come to the next day shift, the last one before the pizzeria closes, in uniform and to make sure that the animatronics are not dangerous to anyone. On the seventh night, a new night watchman named Fritz Smith is hired, whose role the player also takes on. He is fired, however, because he tampered with the animatronics without permission and "stinks" according to the notice of termination.

The conversations with Phone Guy provide evidence that the plot of Five Nights at Freddy's 2 takes place before the first part. This shows that the strange incidents around the animatronics have only just begun. In addition, his remarks lead to the conclusion that one of the employees must have disappeared because the player is surprisingly supposed to take over his day shift at a children's birthday party . Phone Guy doesn't sound as nervous as in the first part of the game. Another important clue to the true timing of the event is the paycheck that Fitzgerald receives at the end of the fifth and sixth nights. On them the date of issue is given as 1987, while Phone Guy mentions in the first part a "bite from '87" in the past, after which it was decided not to let the animatronics run around freely.

Characters

People

There are four protagonists in Five Nights at Freddy's 2 : Jeremy Fitzgerald and Fritz Smith , whose role is played by the player, Phone Guy , who gives tips every now and then, and the leading company, Freddy Fazbear Entertainment , whose role is doubtful.

  • Jeremy Fitzgerald: Little is known about him. His appearance is withheld from the player, and there is no official description of the person. It is also unknown when Fitzgerald started his job. Why Fitzgerald remains on duty despite the life-threatening circumstances is unknown and therefore the subject of debate among fans of the series. According to many theories, Fitzgerald is the victim of the '87 bite .
  • Fritz Smith: Almost nothing is known about Smith either. It only occurs on the seventh night. The phone calls with Phone Guy suggest that he is the short-term substitute for Fitzgerald after he was unexpectedly called to the day shift. Smith is fired immediately after the first shift because of the alleged "smell" (in the original the attached reason for termination is odor ) and unauthorized adjustment of the programming of the animatronics.
  • Phone Guy: “Phone Guy” is the name given to the ominous caller who leaves a message on tape every night. He never appears in person and has not yet been given a real name. His behavior appears carefree and affable. Based on certain statements, it is often assumed that Phone Guy knows more about the missing children and the animatronics than he reveals. Sometimes it is also suspected that he was the murderer. Phone Guy claims his favorite animatronic is Foxy and at the same time admits that he is downright afraid of The Puppet . His habit of downplaying the animatronics threat could be because he works during the day (which he implies in several tapes). He may therefore only know the behavior of the characters during the day.
  • Freddy Fazbear Entertainment: Freddy Fazbear Entertainment is the actual client of Fitzgerald, Smith and Phone Guy. Nobody from the company appears personally. If you follow the conversations with Phone Guy carefully, it turns out that there was another restaurant called Fredbear's Family Diner before the opening of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria , but it had to close. It is speculated that the company's mascot, Freddy Fazbear, has a long history and may even have been used in Fredbear's Family Diner .
  • Purple Guy (German "Purpurner / Lila / Violetter Typ" or "Purpurner / Lila / Violetter Mann") : The purple man appears exclusively in the mini-games. His role in these games suggests that he was responsible for the murders in Five Nights at Freddy’s . It is shown completely purple to purple. In the mini-game “Save them!” He appears to be holding a telephone receiver in his right hand and wearing a gold-colored service badge. This has led to the suspicion that he might be the same as Phone Guy, or was another former security officer in the Freddy Fazbear chain. This can be deduced from a certain remark on the part of Phone Guys : on the 5th night, the latter stated that a position in the day shift had surprisingly become vacant to which Fitzgerald was to be transferred. This circumstance could refer to the purple man. It is not certain that the purple men appearing in the mini-games are all identical.

Animatronics

In Five Nights at Freddy's 2 there are eleven anthropomorphic animatronics as well as some additional characters. What all opponents have in common is that they do not move when they are being watched, unless they are jumpscare. The only exception is Toy Bonnie . In Five Nights at Freddy's 2 , all animatronics from the first game part are represented in a badly damaged condition, along with their modernized counterparts, which are called toy animatronics. Two more animatronics are completely new.

Recurring animatronics

  • Freddy Fazbear : He is the eponymous mascot . A plump, brown teddy bear with a small, black bow tie and a small, black top hat . He is holding a silver chrome microphone in his right hand . In FNaF 2 it is littered with holes. Freddy Fazbear is active from the second night. He enters the office through the middle corridor, but is less aggressive than the other old animatronics.
  • Bonnie the Bunny : A lavender blue rabbit with a red bow tie. He is the most damaged, his entire face is missing and his left arm is torn out. Bonnie is very aggressive and often attacks the night watchman. He enters the office through the left air shaft and is active from the second night.
  • Chica the Chicken : A mustard-yellow chick who wears a white bib with the inscription “Let's eat!” (German: “Let's eat!”) Around her neck. She also looks badly damaged, her hands are torn off and her arms are immobile. The lower part of their beak hangs loosely, revealing the dentition of the endoskeleton. Chica is active from the second night, enters the office through the right air duct and is just as aggressive as Bonnie.
  • Foxy the Pirate : A scrawny fox with an eye patch and grappling hook in place of his left hand. Its crimson, tattered fur, which is missing in places, so that the mechanical endoskeleton is visible, is striking . In addition, some of his teeth are missing and the jaw appears to be dislocated, which means that his mouth is almost always open. Foxy is the only animatronic that is repelled by the light of the flashlight; the mask does not affect him. Foxy is the most aggressive animatronic, he reappears very quickly at the end of the hall in front of the office as soon as he is evicted. Even if his AI level is set to 0 on the seventh night, he is active. In the normal course of the game, Foxy appears from the second night.
  • Golden Freddy : A version of Freddy Fazbear. He is unable to move because he lacks the necessary endoskeleton. Little is known about Golden Freddy and his role in the company. It is partially suspected that he is either a costume possessed or a hallucination . He looks exactly like Freddy Fazbear, but has golden-yellow fur and empty eye sockets. Compared to the first part, it's run down; his left ear is also missing. Unlike in the first game, Golden Freddy is a normal opponent who doesn't crash the game. He appears randomly and comparatively seldom in the office, where he is sitting across from the player. The player can escape it by putting on his mask immediately upon sighting. His disembodied head can also appear in multiple sizes in the main hallway. From there it attacks if it is illuminated too often with the flashlight. Golden Freddy is active from the sixth night.

New animatronics

  • Toy Freddy : He's the counterpart to Freddy Fazbear. Toy Freddy looks clearly minimized, his face is more square and a little flatter. His eyes are larger and are now surrounded by eyelashes, and large, pink-red, circular patches on his cheeks adorn his cheeks . His black bow tie sits a little lower and is proportionally a little larger, now there are two black buttons underneath. Toy Freddy is also brown, but his stomach and upper lips are clearly highlighted. He carries a microphone in his right hand. Toy Freddy is much less active than the rest of the characters, he only becomes really dangerous after the 3rd night. He is active from the first night and comes into the office through the main hall.
  • Toy Bonnie : He's the counterpart to Bonnie. With Toy Bonnie, the redesigns are most evident. He has large, pinkish-red cheek marks, large eyelashes and three whisker spots on each of the upper lips. In contrast to Bonnie, Toy Bonnie has rabbit-typical front teeth. In addition, his eyes are proportionally larger and decorated with emerald green irides . The inside of his ears, his snout and his belly are light pastel blue, almost white. Toy Bonnie also wears a red bow tie. Like its counterpart, Toy Bonnie is very rebellious. He moves a lot already in the first night and returns more frequently, especially from the third night, although he avoids the main course and instead crawls through the right ventilation shaft. It is the only animatronic that visibly moves outside of a jump car. This happens in the office when the player is wearing the Freddy mask and Toy Bonnie is in the exit of the duct.
  • Toy Chica : It is the opposite of Chica. Toy Chica is significantly more curvaceous and slimmer, which highlights her femininity. She also has pink patches on her cheeks and large eyelashes. Her beak is a little smaller and she now has three conspicuous feathers on her head. Her big bib now says “Let's party!” (German: “Let's celebrate!”). As soon as she leaves the stage, her beak and blue eyes disappear. She carries a plate with a model muffin with her everywhere, even during her attack on the player she still has it in her hand. Toy Chica can be seen in the main hall every now and then, but then switches to the left ventilation shaft. She attacks from the first night.
  • Mangle (German " Mischmasch " or "Sammelsurium", from English to mangle ): The counterpart to Foxy. Mangle is also a fox , but has white fur and a pink muzzle with pinkish-red cheek spots. Mangle's gender is controversial. On the one hand, it has a kissable mouth painted on with lipstick and pink-painted nails, on the other hand, Mangle is always addressed by "Phone Guy" as "He". Mangle's name is an allusion to the character's strangely deformed shape: Mangle was supposed to entertain the toddlers in the crawling corner. The kids enjoyed taking Mangle apart every day, however, so Freddy Fazbear's Pizza staff was always busy putting it back together after each day of work. The staff eventually decided it wasn't worth fixing Mangle every day and left it as a kind of three-dimensional puzzle . Since then it has been a misshapen figure made of endoskeleton pieces with two heads and without most of the associated costume. Mangle can shimmy along walls and ceilings like a spider. It appears both in the main hallway and in the right ventilation shaft, but can only enter via the latter. If Mangle is not repelled by the Freddy mask in time, it will enter the room and hang onto the office ceiling. There is a loud interference signal like from a defective radio. From now on, Mangle can carry out a jumpscare at any time without this being prevented. Mangle moves from the second night.
  • Balloon Boy (German "balloon boy"), also abbreviated to BB : A newly introduced animatronic. Balloon Boy has the shape of an almost spherical little boy. He has big, blue eyes, a pointed, red nose and brown, chin-length hair. He wears an umbrella-less, round cap with a propeller on his head, a buttoned shirt with elbow-length sleeves and dark blue trousers. Cap, shirt and socks all have alternating red and blue vertical stripes. In his left hand the Balloon Boy is holding a sign that says “Balloons!” And in his right hand is a red and yellow model balloon. Balloon Boy cannot attack the player himself, but switches off his light. This leaves the player with no protection against the animatronics because the main aisle can no longer be illuminated. Balloon Boy starts laughing all the time when he's in the office, which increasingly attracts the animatronics. It activates on the second night and enters through the left air shaft.
  • The Puppet (German "The Marionette / Doll"), also simply called Puppet : Also new. Puppet is a skinny, lanky and pitch black puppet with a white clown mask . This has pink-red cheek marks and two vertical, blue-violet stripes under the eye sockets, which are supposed to indicate stripes of tears. It is hidden in a huge, dark-gray-blue jukebox that has to be wound up again and again. As long as the jukebox is playing, Puppet stays in its box. If the music box stops playing, Puppet climbs out of the box and approaches the office in no time at all. Its operating principle corresponds to an old-fashioned box devil . Puppet is the only animatronic that cannot be fended off once he has left his hiding place, not even with the mask on.

Other opponents ("hallucinations")

  • Shadow Freddy (German "Schatten-Freddy") : A dark purple version of Golden Freddy with strikingly shining teeth and eyes. Shadow Freddy rarely appears in the parts / service room where Bonnie usually sits. If the player looks at Shadow Freddy for too long, the game crashes.
  • Shadow Bonnie / RWQFSFASXC : A pitch black version of Toy Bonnie, with differently shaped, glowing teeth and glowing eyes. Shadow Bonnie rarely appears in the left corner of the office. If the player does not immediately put on the mask when he appears, the game will crash. Its official name is RWQFSFASXC.
  • Endoskeleton: The endoskeleton is a silver, chrome-plated endoskeleton that appears unadorned in the restaurant. It can be seen near the Puppet's gift box and in the left ventilation duct. It never appears in the office and does not threaten the player in any other way. It may be just a hallucination. Alternatively, it is believed that the endoskeleton belongs to "Golden Freddy's" empty costume. Also, because of the shape of its ears, the skeleton is sometimes thought to belong to a version of Foxy.

Gameplay

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 belongs to the genre of survival horror . The player should not only be frightened by jumpscares, but also challenged and entertained by the targeted and skillful stirring up of fear and paranoia . The object of the game is to survive five nights.

Two more nights are available as bonus levels , with the sixth night being significantly more difficult than the previous ones, while the player can individually set the level of difficulty for ten animatronics on the seventh night.

control

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 can be played on Windows PCs , Linux PCs, Android-enabled devices and / or iOS computers. Control takes place with Windows and Linux by mouse click and keyboard , with Android, Windows Phone and iOS via touchscreen and with the console versions via the respective buttons and keys.

Rules of the game

It is played in single player mode from the first person perspective . The player is in an office from which he controls the action. He can switch between the office and the small surveillance monitor on his tablet using the keyboard . You can switch between several surveillance cameras on the surveillance monitor . Otherwise, the player's view of the left and right ventilation shafts of the office, as well as the main corridor, is limited and he cannot leave his room.

Each night shift starts at 12:00 midnight and ends at 6:00 a.m. In real time, a night in the Windows and Linux versions lasts about eight to nine minutes each, in the Android, Windows Phone and iOS versions it is just under five to six minutes. The player must keep an eye on the two ventilation shafts, the main hallway and the surveillance screens. The animatronics approach the office in different ways and try to ambush the player. Via the surveillance cameras, the player can track the routes that the animatronics take on their night walk through the building. If the animatronic that is currently on the screen moves, the associated camera is briefly switched off.

The player must put on a specially provided Freddy mask as soon as one of the animatronics appears in the office or in the ventilation shaft. There is also a flashlight that can be used to illuminate the hallway. However, the battery supply is limited for each night and the batteries empty faster and faster each night. Furthermore, the player has to continuously wind up a music box that can be seen on one of the camera screens. If this is neglected, the music box stops playing and the character The Puppet wakes up, who cannot be stopped by any other means.

If all the battery power is used up, the hallway and ventilation ducts can no longer be lit, which makes it impossible to stop the Animatronic Foxy . If one of the animatronics manages to grab the guard, a jumpscare takes place, which shows the attack of this animatronics on the player. The game-over screen shows the Freddy mask from the guard's point of view. Freddy Fazbear can be seen staring at the player.

Mini-games

In Five Nights at Freddy's 2 there are mini-games that can start randomly after a jumpscare . The graphics of the mini-games are based on those of the Atari 2600 . During the mini-games, the player takes on the role of a character from the series and has to fulfill certain tasks. The mini-games detail key moments from the series' plot. All game versions are controlled via the keyboard or the touchscreen; the player can determine the direction by pressing the "W", "S", "A" and "D" keys. The following mini-games are available (names are unofficial):

  • Save them! (German "Save them!"). As Freddy Fazbear, the player must follow the marionette-animatronic puppet through the pizzeria in which FNaF 2 takes place. Freddy is always shown to a room with a huge present box and a dead child. There are also dead children in the rest of the building, five in all. The other animatronics can also be found in the building. If a certain time elapses or if certain objects are touched, the game ends with a red, flickering image . Then the main menu of Five Nights at Freddy's 2 appears . Rarely does a person depicted in purple appear in the mini-game and run towards Freddy . If she catches him, a blue, flickering interfering image appears with the words “You can't”, whereupon FNaF 2 closes itself. A robotic voice spells "Save them" throughout the game.
  • Give gifts, give life! (German "Give presents, give life!"). In this game, the player takes on the role of the puppet . There are four dead children in a single room. First, Puppet has to follow the instruction "Give presents!" And give each of the children a present. Then the request “Give life!” Appears, whereupon the player has to select the children again. This time Puppet puts the corpse on masks of the four main animatronics Freddy , Bonnie , Chica and Foxy . If the task is completed, a fifth child's corpse appears in the middle of the room for a split second and the game ends with a jumpscare by Golden Freddy . During the game, a robot voice spells out “Help them”.
  • Take cake to the children! (German "Bring the children cake!"). Here, as Freddy Fazbear , the player has to bring six children cake that they are waiting for. When they get their cake, the figures glow green and smile. If Freddy lets them wait too long, however, the characters turn red and look angry. Meanwhile, a crying child is standing outside the door. As time goes on, Freddy moves slower and slower. After a few seconds of playing in this mini-game, a purple car pulls up from which a man of the same color gets out and murders the crying child. Then the mini-game ends with a jumpscare of the puppet . Meanwhile, a robot voice spells out “Save him” (Eng .: “Save him”).
  • Foxy Go! Go! Go! . As Foxy, the player has to leave his hiding place - Pirate Cove from Five Nights at Freddy’s - and go into the room next door. Five cheering children are waiting for him there. This is repeated twice, the third time a purple man stands grinning in the left corner. If Foxy now enters the next room, all five children are dead. The mini-game ends with a jump-scare through Foxy.

Development history

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 was conceived and programmed by game designer Scott Cawthon after the first part of the game was a surprise success. Originally, publication and approval was only planned for the beginning of 2015. The game was announced through a poster on Cawthon's website on September 12 , 2014. Several more pictures appeared over the following days. A trailer was published on his YouTube channel on November 10th . On November 11th, the game was released on the Desura internet distribution platform . All mobile versions were released by December 6th , and a Linux- compatible version of both parts of the game was released on December 31st . All full versions of the game are chargeable. On October 29, 2019, revised versions of the game for Android and iOS were released, which were developed by Clickteam, the company that developed the game engine on which Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is based. The same company also developed the game's console ports, which came out on November 29, 2019.

Game reviews

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 received both positive and mixed reviews. The game review platform Gamerankings.com awarded 66.25% of a possible 100%, based on four independent reviews so far. For the iOS version, Gamerankings.com has so far awarded 75% of a possible 100%, based on two independent reviews so far. Game critic Nic Rowen particularly praised the feeling of being "helplessly at the mercy of an oppressive cat-and-mouse game" when playing through. He also positively emphasized that it was fun to watch other players when they “screech like little girls at every jump scare”. Rowen awarded the game 7 out of 10 points.

The only thing that was regretted was the excessive level of difficulty, which could be particularly frustrating for beginners. It was also felt to be a shame that Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is too much based on its predecessor and does not offer too much new storyline.

Adaptations

Much like the fictional character " Slenderman ", including both parts of have Five Nights at Freddy's entrance into the popular indie - open world " Minecraft " found. There, players can choose to explore a three-dimensional replica of "Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria" in single or multiplayer mode, while avoiding the animatronics. A similar game offshoot is "Five Nights at Freddy's 2 - Gmod". The so-called "Garry's Mod" (the full name) is a game server that converts various games into 3D animations and offers single-player and multi-player modes. The player can now play Five Nights at Freddy's in three dimensions. Just like in the original game, the adventurers have to escape the animatronics, but they can also "fight" each other. So-called Let's Play videos for both Five Nights at Freddy’s parts are developing into real hype on the YouTube video channel .
