The flag of Bangladesh shows a red disk shifted to the left from the center of the flag on a green background. The red disk symbolizes the sun rising over Bengal . The color red also stands for the blood of the victims in the struggle for the country's independence. The color green does not represent Islam, but the lushness of the country's fields. The diameter of the red disk is two-thirds the height of the flag. Its center is shifted in a ratio of 9:11 to the flagpole.
It was officially adopted on January 17, 1972. A similar flag was used during 1971 and the Bangladesh War . The only difference is the outline of Bangladesh that was shown above the red disk. This map was removed from the flag, probably to simplify the representation.
