Franco Riccardi , often mentioned in cast lists as Franco Ricciardi , (* 1921 ) is an Italian opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Beginnings and La Scala in Milan

Riccardi began his career shortly after the Second World War as a lyric tenor at large and medium-sized opera houses in his native Italy. Since his debut as an opera singer, he gave in 1947 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in the role of Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly . Until the early 1950s Riccardi sang in his traditional role. However, he then made a change of subject and repertoire and in the further course of his career took over almost exclusively Comprimario and character roles. From then on he sang numerous medium, smaller, and often also the smallest roles. He was considered one of the leading Comprimario tenors of the post-war period.

In 1954 he made his debut at La Scala in Milan , where he appeared regularly in his Comprimario roles until the late 1960s. At the Scala he was u. a. to be heard as Monostatos in Die Zauberflöte (in Italian), as Goro in Madama Butterfly , as Minister Pang in Turandot , as servant Bardolfo in Falstaff , as Abbé in Adriana Lecouvreur and as monk Missail in Boris Godunow . In 1978 he last appeared at La Scala in Milan.

Guest performances in Italy

Riccardi has appeared on the leading opera stages across Italy. He sang regularly at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in the 1960s. He gave further guest performances at the Rome Opera House (1963; as David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in Italian), at the Teatro Regio di Torino , at the Teatro Margherita in Genoa , at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo , at the Teatro Comunale di Firenze , Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste , at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari , at the Teatro Bellini in Catania and at the Teatro Grande in Brescia .

He appeared at the opera festival in the Caracalla Thermen (1968; as Goro), at the festival in the Arena di Verona (1969; as Minister Pang) and at the festival in Martina Franca (1982).

Guest performances in Europe and overseas

Riccardi also sang in other European countries with guest appearances at the Lausanne Opera (1960), at the Nancy Opera House (1978) and at the Monte Carlo Opera House (1980; as Spoletta in Tosca , 1982; in Lucia di Lammermoor ).

In 1972 he made guest appearances in the United States at the Dallas Opera House .

Riccardi's other roles included Lord Arturo Buklaw / Normanno in Lucia di Lammermoor , Borsa in Rigoletto , Cassio in Otello , Edmondo in Manon Lescaut , Il Tinca in Il tabarro , the Incroyable in Andrea Chénier and Prince Schuiskij in Boris Godunow .

Riccardi recorded many of his Comprimario roles for the record . Sometimes he played different roles several times in different recordings and with different conductors.

In 1959 he sang the role of Sir Arturo Buklaw alongside Renata Scotto (Lucia) and Giuseppe di Stefano (Edgardo) in a studio production of the opera Lucia di Lammermoor , published by Deutsche Grammophon , under the musical direction of Nino Sanzogno . In 1967 he sang the role of Normanno in Lucia di Lammermoor in a radio recording of Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI) at RAI Torino under the conductor Francesco Molinari-Pradelli ; his partners were Renata Scotto (Lucia) and Luciano Pavarotti (Edgardo).

In 1965, also under Francesco Molinari-Pradelli, he sang Minister Pang in Turandot in a studio recording published by EMI with Birgit Nilsson in the title role.
