Career

Frank Schmickler began his motorsport career in kart racing in 1981 . In 1984 he switched to German Formula Ford , in which he was runner-up in 1985. From the following year he competed in the German Formula 3 Championship . In 1988, Schmickler received a BMW M3 E30 from Zakspeed in the German Touring Car Championship . His best race result was a fourth place on the airfield course in Wunstorf . In the final bill, he finished twelfth in the championship.

After Schmickler had spent a year in the German Formula 3 championship, he returned to the DTM in 1990. He drove a BMW M3 E30 for the MM Diebels team . With a fourth place at the Berlin AVUS as the best race result, he reached the 19th championship place. In the same year he celebrated the greatest success of his career when he won the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring with his teammates Altfrid Heger and Joachim Winkelhock in a BMW M3 E30 from Linder Motorsport .

Schmickler started the 1991 season in the DTM with a Mercedes-Benz 190E Evo II from Team Mass Schons . There he did not get past eleventh place, however. After several unsuccessful races he moved end of the season on a Opel Omega 3000 from Irmscher . But even here he could not achieve better results and so he remained without points in 1991. After the season he left the DTM.

In 1992 Schmickler contested several races in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany . The following season he moved to the newly founded Porsche Supercup . At the Hungaroring he reached the podium with third place and he finished the championship in eighth place. In 1994 Schmickler returned to the DTM. There he drove a BMW M3 E36 Class B for Linder Motorsport. His best race result was twelfth place in Donington , but he couldn't score any points.

Schmickler spent the following years in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany. In 1995 he achieved his first race win at the Nürburgring . He finished the season on the ninth championship course. In 1996 he did not achieve any race wins, but he was on the podium in six out of nine races and he was runner-up. He recommended himself for the Super Touring Car Cup , in which he drove an Alfa Romeo 155 for the Cool Fire Team Engstler in 1997 on the first seven of ten race weekends . However, he did not get beyond the back midfield and so he finished 25th in the championship. At the same time as the STW Cup, Schmickler continued to compete in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany. At the Siegerlandring he scored a race win and reached the sixth championship place.

In 1998 Schmickler was again victorious in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany on the Diepholz airfield circuit and he finished the season in fifth place in the drivers' standings. In 1999 he won the races at Zweibrücken Airport and the Nürburgring and came sixth in the drivers' championship. This is where he ended the 2000 season, when he celebrated a victory at the Norisring . The following season was less successful, however, as Schmickler did not reach a podium and only achieved the 14th championship place. Although he never stood on the podium again in 2002, he was able to improve to ninth place in the drivers' standings. After the season he left the Porsche brand cup.

In the 2003 season, Schmickler took part in a Mercedes-Benz SLK from Carlsson Racing in the BFGoodrich endurance championship Nürburgring and in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, but retired from this race early. In 2004 Schmickler competed in the Porsche 996 GT3 RS from Raeder Motorsport in the endurance championship and in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring. With his teammates Thomas Jäger and Jonathan Price , he reached sixth place in the overall standings at the season highlight. In 2005 Schmickler competed in sprint races for the first time when he contested two races for Land Motorsport in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany. However, he was not included in the championship standings because he did not complete enough races as a guest starter. In the same year he again took part in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring with an Audi S4 , which his team had to give up after just nine hours.

Schmickler has been driving in the newly founded ADAC GT Masters since 2007 . In his first season he shared a Porsche 997 GT3 Cup from Seyffarth Motorsport with his team mate Jan Seyffarth . He reached the podium a total of four times and ended the season in third place in the drivers' championship. In 2008 he drove a Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 from Argo Racing with Sebastian Asch .
