Franz Binder (born November 25, 1950 in Arad , People's Republic of Romania ) is a Romanian - Austrian song , oratorio and opera singer ( baritone ), music teacher and choir conductor .

Franz Binders speaks German , Hungarian and Romanian . He first attended a German elementary school, then a Hungarian high school, where he passed his Matura in 1969. He then graduated from Timișoara and Cluj (Klausenburg) to become a music teacher and choir conductor. From 1967 he received his vocal training, especially in his hometown, in Timișoara and Cluj and later in Magdeburg , Vienna and Salzburg . He got his first engagement as an opera singer in 1973 at the age of 23, as the youngest baritone at the Hungarian State Opera in Cluj.

In May 1978, Binder accepted a solo engagement as a baritone at the Volkstheater Halberstadt , for which he moved to the German Democratic Republic (GDR) with his wife and son (* 1975) . In 1983 the family went on vacation in Transylvania , after which their son was no longer allowed to leave Romania. Her daughter, born in 1979, was allowed to travel to the GDR as she was not yet of compulsory schooling. On the night of April 13-14, 1986, Binder fled his car across the Hungarian-Austrian border. His wife and daughter stayed in Budapest for the time being , but were also brought across the border by a helper a month later. A few months later the parents were able to buy their son out of Romania for around 20,000 shillings. On April 15, 1986, Binder presented himself at the Landestheater Linz and was initially given a choir position; on May 1st he was already singing in the choir in a performance of Richard Wagner's The Flying Dutchman . The following year he received a solo contract.

As a lieder and oratorio singer, Franz Binder performed in numerous concert halls, such as in his home country or in Berlin , Budapest, Dresden , Leipzig and Linz . In the feature film Blonder Tango (1986) directed by Lothar Warneke , he embodied a Hungarian tenor . He retired on June 2, 2015.
