Franz Jung (* 3. December 1936 in Neundorf , county Habelschwerdt , Lower Silesia province ) is a Roman Catholic priest , Prelate , Apostolic prothonotary and 1983-2012 Visitor for priests and faithful of the former County of Glatz , which until 1972 the Archdiocese of Prague belonged . Since 1983 he has been the last to hold the office of Grand Dean .

life and work

Franz Jung is the son of a farmer. As a toddler, he and his parents moved to Gläsendorf near Mittelwalde , which, as a result of World War II , fell to Poland along with most of Silesia in 1945. After the Germans were expelled in 1946, the Jung family initially moved to Liesborn in Westphalia in the Warendorf district . Later, the parents were able to take over an agricultural position in Lüdinghausen / Coesfeld district .

Franz Jung first attended a school in Xanten , where the Wroclaw priest Paulus Tillmann had set up one of his boarding schools for displaced students. After graduating from high school in Lüdinghausen, Jung studied Catholic theology at the University of Münster . On June 29, 1964, he was in Münster Cathedral by Bishop Joseph Hoffner for priests ordained. He then worked as a chaplain in several parishes on the Lower Rhine , first in Wesel (1964–1968), then in Moers (1968–1972) and finally in Goch . In 1976 he was appointed pastor to St. Elisabeth in Duisburg-Walsum-Vierlinden . From 1982 to 1989 he was Diocesan President of the Catholic Workers' Movement (KAB) in the Diocese of Münster ; at the same time he became head of the pastoral care department in the vicariate general and rector of the chapel of the Gottfried-Könzgen-Heim in Haltern am See .

Grand Dean of the County of Glatz

During his theology studies in Münster and Munich, Franz Jung was involved in Catholic youth work in the County of Glatz. After the death of the great dean Prelate Paul Sommer in 1983, he was appointed his successor and on September 22, 1983 appointed papal prelate and canonical visitor for priests and faith of the County of Glatz and a member of the German Bishops' Conference . It was connected with the right to wear miter , crook and pectoral and to be allowed to participate in the German Bishops' Conference. Since the statutes of the Bishops 'Conference in Germany were renewed in 1998, he is no longer a member of the German Bishops' Conference and has not been a visitor to the County of Glatz since 2012, but still bears the title of Grand Dean. Since both the function of the KAB diocesan presidency and the new visitor's office were associated with intensive travel activities, Franz Jung gave up his work at the KAB and in August 1989, in addition to his duties as a visitor, took over the pastoral office of the small inner city community of St. Aegidii in Münster and then as a subsidiary in Münster-Mecklenbeck St. Anna. In addition, he was the spokesman for the visitor's conference in Germany and in 2008 and 2009 he was also a visitor for priests and believers from the Archdiocese of Breslau , ie he was responsible for all German believers from Silesia .

As Grand Dean, Prelate Franz Jung, in his capacity as a visitor for priests and believers from the County of Glatz, took part in almost all home meetings of the County of Glatz's home groups . Every year he organized the pilgrimage for priests and believers from the County of Glatz to the Marian pilgrimage site of Telgte and Werl in Westphalia, as well as a bus pilgrimage to the County of Glatz. In Germany as in Poland he continues to organize several social and religious meetings in which the former German as well as the current Polish residents of the County of Glatz take part in order to exchange ideas and pray together. He also maintains contact with many Polish clergy in County Glatz. In addition, since 1999 he has published the “Rundbrief des Großdechanten” every quarter. He is actively committed to the preservation of religious monuments in the County of Glatz, supports German-Polish projects in the spirit of understanding and rapprochement between the two peoples and spends several times a year in the former County of Glatz.

In 1998 he initiated the process of beatification of chaplain Gerhard Hirschfelder , the martyr of the faith from the County of Glatz, who lost his life in the Dachau concentration camp in 1942 . The beatification on September 19, 2010 in Münster Cathedral, which was also attended by Polish priests from the Archdiocese of Wroclaw, was one of the highlights of Franz Jung's professional life. Since October 2, 2001, Franz Jung has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon .

On March 17, 2012, Prelate Franz Jung retired from active service as a visitor. At the same time the visitature was dissolved. The concerns of the Glatzer are now represented by the new visitation for the faithful from all of Silesia (Breslau, Branitz and the Glatzer Land ). The title of Glatzer grand dean, which is unique in the church, is no longer passed on, but Franz Jung keeps it until the end of his life. Prelate Jung is the 14th major dean and at the same time the 50th and last dean of the County of Glatz since this office was first mentioned in the 13th century.

Prelate Franz Jung always remained closely connected to his home in Glatzer. He continues to take an active part in the work of the Silesian Cultural Works Foundation.
