Franz Xaver Buhs

Johann Franz Xaver Buhs (or Buß or Buss ) (born July 25, 1790 in Bonn , † April 12, 1883 in Trier ) was the Lord Mayor of Trier.

Franz Xaver Buhs was the son of the businessman Martin Buß and his wife Franziska nee Baur. He attended grammar school and on October 8, 1807 he became secretary and registrar at the sub-prefecture of Bonn . On May 30, 1812, he became supernumerar at the main tax office in Minden. He was later transferred to Hamburg and returned to Minden in April 1814. After the French had cleared the Rhineland, he was a provisional employee in the Bonn district administration until the spring of 1815.

From May 17, 1815 he was a volunteer in the 5th Rhenish Infantry Regiment . On July 9, 1815, he became a second lieutenant.

On May 16, 1816 he became district secretary in Kreuznach. At the age of 29 he became mayor of Kreuznach in 1819 with the personal title of mayor.

On May 12, 1820 he married Augusta Sophia Karcher in Kreuznach (born June 16, 1800 in Kreuznach ( 28th prailial to IX ), † March 6, 1867 in Trier), the daughter of the businessman Friedrich Karcher and his wife Amalia, née Hecht.

During his time in Kreuznach, he initiated the formation of a railway construction committee in 1844 and was involved in working out a financing concept for the Rhein-Nahe-Bahn . The construction of the line from Neunkirchen to Bingen am Rhein was only approved by the Prussian government in 1855.

In 1845 he became mayor of Mayen .

On October 6, 1849 Buhs was acting mayor in Trier; the election took place on August 9, 1850; his confirmation (including his character as Lord Mayor) by Friedrich Wilhelm IV. took place on August 4, 1851. Up until this year he was also the royal district administrator of the Trier district, then the two functions were separated and he could only retain one of the offices. On August 5, 1861, he was given the character of a Privy Councilor. The Trier Chamber of Commerce, a forerunner of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry , was founded under Buhs in 1855 . In 1861 he retired. A street in Trier-Heiligkreuz was named after Buhs, whose grave has been preserved in the Trier main cemetery .

In addition to his political offices, Buhs was temporarily president of the Society for Useful Research in Trier . He is also considered to be the founder of the Bad Kreuznach Concert Society : in 1830 he followed an appeal by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy to found mixed choirs; The first appearance took place in 1831. Buhs directed and conducted the choir himself until 1845.
