Franz Zimmermann (philologist)

Franz Zimmermann (born February 15, 1891 in Moritzdorf near Dresden, † January 24, 1962 in Leipzig ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Franz Zimmermann, the son of a farmer and an elementary school teacher, attended a grammar school in Dresden and from 1910 studied classical philology at the University of Leipzig . After he had interrupted his studies in the First World War , he returned to the university in 1918, received his doctorate there in 1919 and passed the teaching examination in 1920. In the following years he worked as a high school teacher in Leipzig, Chemnitz and Dresden.

After 1945 Zimmermann no longer worked in school. For several years he worked as a private teacher, assistant clerk and market helper until he was hired as a lecturer for Greek and Latin at the University of Leipzig in 1951. In 1954 he was employed as a lecturer in late Greek philology and papyrology at the University of Rostock . He kept his residence in Leipzig, where he worked as a visiting professor until his death. In 1955 , at the age of 64 , he qualified as a professor in Rostock for classical philology. In 1961, at the age of 70, he was appointed full professor in Rostock. He died a year later.

Zimmermann's main research focus was the ancient novel. His dissertation and his habilitation thesis deal with the novelist Chariton von Aphrodisias .
