Franz de Paula Pištěk ( Czech František Pištěk , Polish Franciszek de Paula Pisztek ; born April 6, 1786 in Prčice , Bohemia ; † February 2, 1846 in Lemberg ) was Bishop of Tarnów and Archbishop of Lemberg .

Life

Franz de Paula Pistek came from a Prčice peasant family. After graduating from high school, he studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Prague and was ordained a priest on August 21, 1808 . He then worked in the diocese of Leitmeritz ; first as a chaplain in Smolnice ( Smolnitz ) and then as a pastor in Jungfernteinitz . In 1817 he became dean in Přeštice . In 1823 he received a canonical at the St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague . A year later he became dean of the collegiate chapter in Altbunzlau .

On September 27, 1824 Pope Leo XII appointed him . as auxiliary bishop in Prague and at the same time titular bishop of Azotus . The episcopal ordination donated him on November 14, 1824 Archbishop of Prague Wenceslaus Leopold Chlumčanský von Přestavlk .

As the successor to Bishop Ferdinand Maria Chotek von Chotkow , who had been transferred to Olomouc as Archbishop , Franz de Paula Pistek was appointed Bishop of Tarnów on February 24, 1832 . Since the area had fallen to Austria after the First Partition of Poland in 1772, the appointment was made by Emperor Franz II. The inauguration took place on June 10, 1832 in the Cathedral of Tarnów . During his brief tenure he tried to reorganize the diocese; He also promoted the training of priests, devoted himself to decorating the cathedral and renovating the bishop's house.

On July 24, 1835, Franz de Paula Pistek was appointed Archbishop of Lemberg by Emperor Ferdinand I. The papal confirmation took place on February 11, 1836 by Pope Gregory XVI.

Pistek was a supporter of his hometown Prčice and had a monastery of the Sisters of Mercy built there in 1843 with an almshouse and hospital, which was consecrated in 1845. He died a year later at the age of 60. His body was buried in the crypt of Lviv Cathedral .
