The Franciscan monastery Maria Lankowitz is a Roman Catholic male monastery of the Franciscan order in the western Styrian market town of Maria Lankowitz . It was founded in the middle of the 15th century. The current monastery church was built in the second half of the 17th century and is also the parish church of Maria Lankowitz.

Today (as of January 2016) three Franciscans belong to the monastery, one of whom is also the pastor of the market parish.

history

Today's Franciscan monastery was founded in 1455 by the knight Georg Gradner. The old monastery church, probably built from 1446 onwards, was consecrated in 1468. The current monastery building was built between 1656 and 1665 while the Antonius chapel and the churchyard wall date from 1660/61. The old church was replaced between 1678 and 1681 by a new building built by Jakob Schmerlaib , which was dedicated to the Visitation of Mary in 1684 . In 1712 two side chapels were added to the church. The interior of the church was restored in 1955/56.

The monastery church, which is both a pilgrimage and parish church of Maria Lankowitz, was built by Jakob Schmerlaib between 1678 and 1681 and is surrounded by a churchyard wall. The church tower, built between 1870 and 1872, is located south of the westernmost nave yoke and has a pointed helmet as the roof. A wooden roof turret is located above the end of the choir . On the outer wall of the south side chapel there is a niche with stone figures of Saints Augustine and John from the first half of the 18th century. The southern entrance portal of the church is located between two chapel extensions and bears the building inscription 1681, while the western portal bears the inscription 1683. The porch dates from the 19th century. In the churchyard there is also a baroque crucifixion group, designed by Marx Schokotnigg between 1712 and 1714 , as well as a crucifix that does not belong to it .

The six-bay , undivided and straight closed interior of the church is divided into the nave and the choir . The interior is spanned by a groin vault, which is supported by belts resting on narrow, flat pillars . On the south side of the church, east of the third and fifth yoke and at the height of the nave, there are two chapels with three-eighth closures that were added in 1712 . On the north side there is also a flat chapel on the third yoke. The three-axis gallery, supported by a groin vault, is located in the western part of the nave and has a balustrade that gently swings forward in the middle part. The three-aisled and two-bay sacristy is in line with the church and was added to the east of the end of the choir in 1716 by a member of the Carlone family of artists . It is spanned by a groin vault resting on rectangular pillars.

The high altar with a large column structure was erected in 1767 and has figural jewelry made by Veit Königer . The head statues on the altar represent the Saints Joachim and Anna and Zacharias and Elizabeth . Across the tabernacle is as miraculous image a little, by a canopy framed carved figure of the enthroned Madonna and Child , which was probably about carving in the 15th century. On the Anna Altar, donated in 1650 and consecrated in 1651, until 1684 referred to as the Altar of Grace, there is a statue of Anna herself , made by Alfred Schlosser in 1959 . The Joseph Altar from 1684 bears several statues, which are probably by Andreas Marx . Both the Holy Family pointing altarpiece and the death of St. Joseph performing essay image of Joseph altar were of Hans Adam Weissenkircher painted. The Franciscan altar was erected in 1719 and the remains of an altar from the first half of the 18th century can be found in the cross chapel. The reliquary , dating from around 1730, contains the bones of St. Clement . The Rococo style pulpit, attributed to Philipp Jakob Straub , was first mentioned in a document in 1770 and is decorated with reliefs depicting sermons. The organ was taken in 1737 and the work was changed at the end of the 19th century. The font with an attachment dates from the second third of the 18th century. In the sacristy there are several cupboards from around 1717 as well as a black marble washbasin on the north wall . In the former treasury above the sacristy there is a Barbara altar dated to 1729 and a parament cabinet dated to 1717 . The choir stalls in the sacristy also date from around 1717.

Inside the church there are several oval baroque pictures painted by Bernhard Veldner in 1706 with scenes from the founding legend of the Franciscans. The wall and ceiling paintings in the church were painted by Felix Barazutti . The wall paintings painted in 1961 and the large altarpiece in the cross chapel as well as the 14 Stations of the Cross in the nave are by Toni Hafner . In the sacristy there is a baroque copy of a portrait of Emperor Friedrich III dated 1727 . as well as seven pictures of the founding legend from the end of the 17th century and a painting of St. Elisabeth from the second quarter of the 18th century.

Anthony's Chapel

The Antonius Chapel , built between 1660 and 1661 by Bartolomeo Montiano , is located within the churchyard wall that was built at the same time and was consecrated in 1666. At the eastern end the roof has a ridge turret . Furthermore, on the eastern facade, above the entrance, there is a stucco-framed niche with a wooden statue of the holy Dismas restored in 1961 .

The interior is spanned by a pointed barrel. The Antonius Altar, designed in the Rococo style, was erected around 1770. Furthermore, inside there is a large votive picture attributed to Giovanni Pietro de Pomis , which shows Sigmund Friedrich Herberstein , who died in 1621, with his family kneeling in front of a crucifix.

Monastery building

The actual monastery building is located north of the church and was largely built between 1656 and 1665 by Bartolomeo Montiano, including some older parts of the building in the northwest around two courtyards. In the cloister courtyard stands a stone figure of Mary kneeling on clouds from the second quarter of the 18th century . In the refectory and in the cloister corridors there are several baroque pictures and figures of saints from around 1733. Two of the pictures in the refectory show interest pounds and workers in the vineyard . One votive picture is dated to the year 1714.

Churchyard wall and wayside shrines

The church courtyard wall was built between 1660 and 1661 by Bartolomeo Montiano and has a baroque portal with a painted and renovated architectural prospectus in 1807. Next to the cemetery portal there are two baroque stone statues from the 18th century depicting two Franciscan saints. In front of the church there is a wayside shrine dated 1658, which was restored in 1895, as well as a war memorial. In the churchyard there are also five holy images painted by Toni Hafner in 2002.

Along the access road are eight statues of saints made of sandstone from around 1730. Seven of the statues are believed to come from the workshop of Johann Jacob Schoy , while the statue of St. Mary is designed in the style of Marx Schokotnigg.
