Women in New York is a play that premiered in September 1976 at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg as a contribution to the bicentenary of the USA. It is the German version, translated by Nora Gray, of the English-language Broadway play "The Women" by the writer and later Republican politician Clare Booth , written in 1936, published and premiered in the same year . This, sometimes referred to as a comedy, sometimes as a socially critical satire , was performed a total of 666 times on Broadway in the 1936/37 theater season and filmed under the same title in 1939 by George Cukor . Rainer Werner Fassbinder took over the direction of the theater after Ulrich Heising was canceled shortly after rehearsals began due to illness and suspected concerns about serious and precise performance. Because of the great success with the audience and criticism, it was recorded on television by the NDR in 1977 . The play, at the same time Fassbinder's last work for the theater, unites 42 roles for 18 actresses.
The set was designed by Rolf Glittenberg , the costumes by Frida Parmeggiani .
action
New York in the 1930s : a group of wealthy women meet in beauty salons, fashion salons, at the hairdresser's, at parties and other social occasions. The conversations they have are about beauty and health and their husbands, either how to get it or how to take it away from others. They do not have a job themselves, are dependent on their husbands' money, which is due to the fact that none of the men appear in the play. Intrigues are spun, the focus is on the marriage of Mary Haines, her husband has a relationship with the much younger Crystal Allen, but Mary does not give up, she fights for him, even against the advice of her mother and her friends.
