Africa Cup 1998 / qualification

Attendees

A total of 36 teams registered to take part in the 1998 Africa Cup in Burkina Faso.

Defending champions South Africa and hosts Burkina Faso automatically qualified for the finals. Of the remaining 34 teams, 22 had a bye for the main round, which included seven groups of four teams each. The remaining 12 teams determined the remaining 6 participants in the main round in a knockout round with home and away games. The group winners and runners-up in the main round qualified for the 1998 Africa Cup in Burkina Faso.
