The North Africans from Morocco were the sensational winners of Group F. After two goalless draws against Poland and England, the outsider was particularly convincing in the 3-1 win over Portugal. England finished second, but only fought for this place after a 3-0 lineker hat trick. Before that, there was a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Portugal. Poland also made it to the round of 16 in third place, for which the Eastern Europeans' only goal, Smolarek's 1-0 against Portugal, was sufficient.

Germany had great difficulties against Morocco and had to wait until shortly before the end until Matthäus put a 30-meter free kick into the mesh of the North Africans, who played with a lot of respect against the uninspired Germans. The best thing about this game, in the opinion of team boss Beckenbauer after the game, was the result.
