The international soccer match Portugal - Germany 2000 is the third and final group match in the 2000 European soccer championship in the Netherlands and Belgium between the Portuguese national team and the German national team . Starting position

Portugal finished second in their preliminary group , in which they played against Hungary , Romania , Slovakia , Azerbaijan and Liechtenstein , and qualified as the best runner-up in the group directly for the finals in the Netherlands and Belgium. Germany met in his qualifying group on Turkey , Finland , Moldova and Northern Ireland ; as group winner, he qualified for the European Championship finals in the Netherlands and Belgium.

When the final groups were drawn, Portugal and Germany were drawn into one group together with Romania and England . The German national team didn't get past a 1-1 draw in the opening game against Romania, while Portugal won their first game against the English national team 3-2. Five days later, the Portuguese beat Romania 1-0 and with the same result the English won against Germany with an Alan Shearer goal .

Portugal were the group winners, while the German national team was under pressure before the last group game against said Portuguese national team: Germany had to win by two goals and also hope for a defeat by the English against Romania. The latter actually happened, Romania won 3-2. The Portuguese team came up with nine substitutes.

Course of the game

The German national team showed little understanding of the game and had not varied the pace, but it was noticed in the first few minutes by some combinations. After half an hour, the German striker Marco Bode hit the post after a presentation by Mehmet Scholl . A short time later met Sérgio Conceição after submission of Pauleta to 1: 0 for the Portuguese national team. In the 54th minute, Conceição scored the second Portuguese goal, having previously prevailed against the German defender Dietmar Hamann and the German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn let the ball slip into the goal. aftermath

After the departure, national coach Erich Ribbeck resigned. The defeat against Portugal was the last international match for Lothar Matthäus , Ulf Kirsten and Thomas Häßler . The Portuguese national team reached the semi-finals at the European Championship finals and was eliminated there against the eventual title holder France .

The course of the tournament, which was disappointing from a German point of view, led to a reform of German youth work: for the 2001/02 season, all 18 Bundesliga clubs had to run a youth performance center, and in the course of the award of licenses and approval for playing in the Bundesliga, each club had to hire a full-time youth coach. In addition, around 350 bases with up to three qualified trainers were created, and the talents have been spotted and promoted there since then. In addition, national soccer leagues have been established for youth teams.

At the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea , the German national team reached the final and lost to Brazil there , while Portugal was eliminated after the group stage. At the 2004 European Championship , which took place in Portugal two years later , the German national team dropped out again after the group stage, while the hosts reached the final.
