Günter Wetzel (born June 27, 1922 in Kassel ; † November 26, 2018 in Darmstadt ) was a German politician ( SPD , later CDU ).

Training and military service

In 1941 he made his Abitur at the Wilhelmsgymnasium Kassel . He then did military service until 1945 , and later military exercises in the Bundeswehr . He brought it to Colonel d. R.

After his imprisonment he studied law at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen from 1945 . He made his first state examination in 1949, the second legal state examination in 1953 from 1950, he was in Göttingen for Dr. jur. PhD.

Professional background

From 1953 to 1955 Wetzel worked as assessor and Councilor at the Regional Council in Kassel and was then from 1955 to 1960 chief of police of the city of Kassel. From 1960 to 1962 he was Vice President of the Darmstadt Government , and from 1962 to 1966 President of the Darmstadt Government . From January 19, 1967 to 1968, Wetzel was State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior of the State of Hesse , then State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for All-German Issues until 1971 , later Federal Ministry for Internal German Relations , and from 1971 to 1972 he was State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Defense . On June 30, 1972, he was put into temporary retirement as a political official because of his sharp criticism of the new Ostpolitik . He then left the SPD and joined the CDU in July 1972.

From 1973 to 1977 he worked as a lawyer . From July 3, 1978 to April 12, 1983 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Justice of Schleswig-Holstein . From April 1 to October 3, 1990, he worked as a consultant for the People's Chamber of the GDR . From 1984 to 2005 he was admitted to the bar at the Higher Regional Court in Frankfurt am Main .

He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Society for Human Rights .

Personal

Wetzel was married and the father of three children.
