GG 19 - Germany in 19 Articles is an episode film about the chapter The Basic Rights (Articles 1-19) of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany . The film, initiated by Harald Siebler , premiered on May 31, 2007.

The directors Boris Anderson , Ansgar Ahlers , Marcel Ahrens , Sabine Bernardi , Axel Bold , Savaş Ceviz , David Dietl , Alan Smithee , Johannes Harth , Marion Kracht , André F. Nebe , Carolin Otterbach , Kerstin Polte , Christine Repond , Andreas Samland , Harald Siebler , Suzanne von Borsody , Johannes von Gwinner and Philipp von Werther shot some based on their own scripts.

The project

GG 19 aimed not only at a compilation of 19 short films on 19 basic rights articles of the Basic Law. Rather, within the framework of a democratically designed project, the artistic discussion of society and its basic rights should be gradually transformed into a film. The scripts for the 19 episodes were selected from over 400 submissions by a seven-person jury - the producer himself attended the jury meetings, but had no voting rights. The implementation up to the editing of each episode was carried out by an individually assembled film team. Only in very few exceptional cases were people significantly involved in the implementation of several episodes. To emphasize the federalist idea of the project, each episode was shot in a different city in Germany. Only after the completion of the shooting were the 19 short films made in this way combined into a full-length film according to dramaturgical aspects. All 19 episodes of the film can be viewed online.

Reviews

“'GG19' paints a strange picture of the republic. The normal living conditions of people like you and me are only vaguely recognizable. Almost all of the contributions have a slightly distorted aesthetic, as if Franz Kafka were the patron saint of civil life in this country, and the 'Kafkaesque' was the basic mood. "

- Bert Rebhandl in Der Spiegel

"The result (...) sobering. Because most of the directors of this compilation (...) don't have much to tell "

“It is noticeable that the debates about civil rights and the threatened surveillance state do not appear in the film at all. And so the film illuminates in a strangely abstract way basic rights that have been threatened in real terms since the terrorist attacks of September 11th at the latest (...) After all, 19 short films rush past the viewer in over two hours: That's just too many for a movie, too long and unfortunately often too boring. Community education teachers will probably still torment their school classes with this film. "

"Above all, the compilation is proof that a good intention does not automatically result in a good film: it does not convey 'good reasons for democracy', but rather puts itself on the sidelines of film society through cinematic amateurism."

Others

A book of the same name was published in 2007 for the film. On November 26, 2007, a nationwide school project A good day for democracy was started for the film. Article 20 of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany (“All power comes from the people”) was the inspiration for the entire GG 19 project, which should be understood as “inciting democracy”.

The Film Education Working Group (AKF) of the Länderkonferenz Medienbildung (LKM) recommended the film GG 19 for school and extracurricular educational work. The DVD contains extensive didactic accompanying material in the ROM section for secondary levels I and II .
