course

Upper Gailach

The upper Gailach origin
is the village pond of Kreut

The river, also known as the "Mörnsheimer Bach", rises from the village pond of Kreut, a district of Monheim . Two kilometers below Warching, the stream seeps into a retention basin in the sinkholes of the Monheimer Alb  - in summer completely, in winter part of the inflow can flow through the otherwise dry stream bed below in the Röglinger Tal to Mühlheim .

Gailach spring

The so-called Gailach spring in Mühlheim

The seeping water of the upper Gailach occurs after about four kilometers underground to about 419  m above sea level. NHN from the Gailach spring behind the sponge mill in Mühlheim again to light; this has been proven by dyeing tests. The rushing water flows in three outlets over a length of six meters from crevices on the dolomite slope, about ten times as much as it seeps away at Warching. The discharge is 600 to 700 liters per second, the stream is immediately several meters wide. The source is one of the strongest in Bavaria.

The source is identified by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as geotope 176Q009. See also the list of geotopes in the Eichstätt district .

The Gailach (in front) flows into the Altmühl

Shortly before Mörnsheim, opposite the Finstermühle, the Gailach receives further water from seven springs located close together; the place is therefore called "Seven Fountains". At Altendorf the river flows into the Altmühl .

Character and environment

Places on the Gailach on its constant course below the Gailach spring are Mühlheim , Mörnsheim and Altendorf .

The Gailach Valley, lined with species-rich dry grass , is considered to be scenic; the Gailach winds its way through the meadows. Due to their natural state, the otherwise rare in Bavaria comes here dippers before swimming, diving and can walk along the stream bottom. A cycle path leads through the Gailach Valley .

Shortly before its mouth, on the northern slope of the valley, lies the “Grafsloch”, a rock formation with a cave that was entered by humans 70,000 years ago. According to the stalactite on its ceiling, it is also called the “Stone Rosary”. North of the Gailach estuary, over the rocky areas of the Altmühltal, lies the extensive "juniper garden" with juniper bushes taller than a man .

Mills

The amount of water from the Gailach spring is sufficient to drive six mills along the short stretch of the river, apart from the sponge mill, which was already mentioned in a document in 1282, the Kron, Finster, Markt, Gröbl and Kohlmühle; the latter was first mentioned in a document in 1304 as the “Sternsehermühle” and was owned by the family of Matthias Kelz , the discoverer of the Mörnsheim quarries , from 1668–1897 .
