Garrett Stafford (born January 28, 1980 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American ice hockey defender who was most recently under contract with Ässät Pori in the Liiga .
Career
Garrett Stafford began his career in 1996 with the Des Moines Buccaneers in the US Junior League USHL . He was able to win a regular place with the Buccaneers and improved every season. 1998/99 was the most successful season, which was crowned with winning the playoffs . In addition, Stafford came to 41 scorer points in 56 league games and was one of the ten best preparers of the USHL with 33 assists .
He then went to the University of New Hampshire and played with the college team in the ice hockey league Hockey East . After a solid first season, Stafford then developed into the best defender of his team and also set accents on the offensive. In 2002 and 2003 they won the championship of Hockey East and in 2003 they also made it to the finals of the national college championship of the NCAA .
In the fall of 2003, Stafford moved to the second-rate professional league American Hockey League to the Cleveland Barons . After he started the season with Cleveland, he was also signed by the San Jose Sharks from the NHL , but Stafford stayed with the Barons for the time being, who served as the Sharks' farm team . He had a very good debut season with twelve goals and 34 assists and was chosen as a reward for the AHL All-Rookie Team and the AHL Second All-Star Team . However, the season ended with a negative incident for him. In the sixth playoff game of the first round between Cleveland and the Hamilton Bulldogs , he met his opponent Alexander Pereschogin with a stick check in the face, whereupon both went to the ground. When Stafford stood up, he struck the back of Pereschogin's helmet with the bat, whereupon he hit Stafford in the face with the bat. Stafford fell and was passed out on the ice, twitching with convulsions. Pereschogin was then suspended for the rest of the playoffs as well as for the upcoming AHL season , while Stafford was suspended for six games for his assault.
The following two years in Cleveland were unsuccessful for the team and both times they missed the playoffs, whereupon the team was relocated and renamed Worcester Sharks . The team presented itself much better in the 2006/07 season and reached the playoffs again, where they failed because of the Manchester Monarchs . Stafford was the best defender of the Sharks with eleven goals and 30 assists, but no longer stayed in the organization of the San Jose Sharks, but signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings in the summer of 2007 .
For their farm team, the Grand Rapids Griffins , he went in the AHL in the 2007/08 season , took over the office of team captain with Mark Cullen and Ryan Oulahen and was also one of the main pillars of the defense in Grand Rapids. After several defenders were absent due to injury at the Red Wings in February 2008, Stafford was appointed to the NHL squad for the first time and made his debut on February 23. After a second use for the Red Wings, Stafford returned to the Griffins, where he completed his second best AHL season of his career with 44 points in 69 games.
In July 2008, his contract with the Red Wings expired and he was signed by the Dallas Stars . But even there he did not succeed in making the jump to the NHL squad, whereupon he was sent back to the AHL and returned to the Grand Rapids Griffins. The 2009/10 season spent Stafford exclusively in the AHL and was achievers in the Texas Stars . In July 2010, the defender signed a contract with the Phoenix Coyotes as a free agent . During the 2010/11 season, the American played two NHL games for the team from the US state of Arizona, while Stafford was once again one of the cornerstones of the team in the AHL farm team.
In October 2011, the Phoenix Coyotes transferred him to the Montréal Canadiens together with Petteri Nokelainen in exchange for Brock Trotter and a seven-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft .
In December 2013 he moved to Genève-Servette HC from the National League A before he was signed by Ässät Pori from the Liiga in June 2014 .
