Gelsmühle is a district of the municipality Wittelshofen in the district of Ansbach in Middle Franconia .

geography

The wasteland lies on the right bank of the Sulzach . The district road AN 41 leads to Gelshofen (0.7 km northwest) or Untermichelbach (0.5 km southeast).

history

At Gelsmühle, the Limes led between the guard posts 13/17 and 13/18 over the Sulzach . This 38 m wide transition, at today's oxbow lake, consisted in the run-up to mighty blocks of 25 cubic meters with a foundation thickness of 1.25 m to 1.45 m and openings for the flood. The actual transition was formed by a footbridge on three wooden support pillars standing next to each other at a distance of 3 m so that branches could be removed in the event of flooding.

Gelsmühle was in the Fraisch district of the Ansbach Oberamt Wassertrüdingen . The estate was owned by the imperial city of Dinkelsbühl as the landlord . The donations went to the Dinkelsbühl hospital. From 1797 to 1808 the place was subordinate to the Justice and Chamber Office Wassertrüdingen .

As a result of the community edict, Gelsmühle was assigned to the Wittelshofen tax district, formed in 1809, and the Untermichelbach rural community . On July 1, 1972, Gelsmühle was incorporated into Wittelshofen as part of the regional reform in Bavaria .

The legend of the devil's wall

There is a legend about the Gelsmühle about the origin of the so-called Devil's Wall, which in the 18th century was up to one and a half meters high in places. The inhabitants of the area could no longer explain this wall and brought them in connection with the devil. In Wilburgstetten , for example, the Höllmühle , the Höllbach and the Höllweiher are on the Limes terrain.
