Georg Christian Erhard Westphal (born March 22, 1752 in Quedlinburg ; † December 3, 1808 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German Protestant theologian and teacher . Westphal was royal Prussian consistorial councilor and from 1785 senior pastor at the market church of Our Dear Women in Halle.

Life

Westphal was born the son of a royal Prussian lawyer and tax councilor. His older brother was the later law scholar and professor at the University of Halle Ernst Christian Westphal (1737–1792). The father was taken hostage in 1761, during the Seven Years' War , and brought to Altdorf near Nuremberg . He soon had his family join him.

Westphal received lessons in Greek and Latin from Professor Johann Andreas Michael Nagel , who teaches at the University of Altdorf , and in mathematics from Michael Adelbulner . The father himself taught him history and geography. In 1763 he was able to return home and finish his education at the Quedlinburger Gymnasium , where he mainly learned Hebrew . 1769 he started at the University of Jena , a study theology , which he continued at the University of Halle 1,771th In Halle he was able to attend lectures by Johann Salomo Semler and Johann August Nösselt .

After completing his studies, Westphal took over a position as court master with the royal Prussian chamber president Karl Friedrich von Dacheröden in Erfurt . The employment enabled him to continue his theological studies and to undertake short trips to Gotha and Weimar . He received his master's degree from the Philosophical Faculty of Erfurt University , which enabled him to take up a public education. In 1775 he became a teacher at the Quedlinburg high school. For four years he taught mathematics, natural science and German style in the two upper classes of the grammar school. During his time in Quedlinburg he was in close contact with Friedrich Andreas Stroth and Johann Heinrich Friedrich Meineke , both of whom also taught at the Quedlinburg high school.

Westphal followed a call to Halberstadt as second preacher and deacon at the Moritzkirche there . Before that, however, he took a trip through some of the larger German cities to hear famous pulpit speakers. As a result, he published his portraits from 1779 . In 1785 he took over a position as pastor at the market church of Our Dear Women in Halle an der Saale. He was instrumental in the publication of the New Hallische Gesangbuch . In 1805 Westphal became a royal Prussian consistorial councilor. He died on December 2, 1808, at the age of 56, in Halle. His daughter Karoline married the Halle theologian Fürchtegott Christian Fulda in 1830 .

Westphal left behind an extensive body of literature . As early as 1778, his History of the Royal Paris Library was published from its first origins . The first part of his portraits appeared in 1779 , the second was published in 1782. The work subsequently saw several editions. In 1780 Edelwald published the story of a prodigal son in two parts , in 1782 strolls through the great, medium and small world in the realm of mankind and in 1783 sermons about some of Jesus' speeches .
