Life

Undated, historicizing wood engraving with artist signature by Georg Schütz

Georg Schütz grew, like his twin brother Hermann Schütz , into the founding days of the German Empire . In their hometown Schwerin, both of them first visited the local Fridericianum , then the Royal Art School in Berlin .

After completing their studies, the twin brothers initially worked in Berlin for some time, then also in Augsburg , Nuremberg , Stuttgart and other cities before they returned to their hometown. There they operated separate studios , although they sometimes took on larger assignments together . During the Weimar Republic , according to the address directory from 1927 , Georg lived in what was then Rostocker Straße , today's address Goethestraße 41c, while Hermann worked on Cäcilienstraße, today's Schloßgartenallee .

Before that, Georg Schütz had designed the picture bar for the Sunday supplement of the Mecklenburgische Zeitung at the latest in 1921 .

During the German hyperinflation , Schütz provided numerous, often unsigned and stylistically different designs especially for the notes of the Reutergeld published in Mecklenburg , including for the towns of Boltenhagen , Dargun , Gnoien , Grabow , Güstrow , Krakow , Ludwigslust , Malchin , Malchow , Neuhaus , Neukalen , Parchim , Penzlin , Plau , Ribnitz , Röbel , Schwerin, Stavenhagen , Waren , Warnemünde and Zarrentin . In 1922 Georg Schütz also designed the emergency money for the city of Crivitz .

In the 1930s the Schütz brothers were known for their drawings for Das deutsche Reichsheer . The twin brothers also provided the artistic design of the barracks for anti-tank department 12 in Schwerin . Also at the time of National Socialism , Georg Schütz created frescos in the great hall of Schwerin Central Station in 1938, which caused great public excitement .

Unlike his brother Hermann, who was seen as a more serious person, Georg Schütz was also rather humorous in his works. But in his later years he suffered from a skin allergy and could no longer paint with oil paints. However, other reasons are being considered for his suicide in the final year of the Second World War in 1945.
