George Marshall (1921)

George E. Marshall (born December 29, 1891 in Chicago , Illinois , † February 17, 1975 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film director , screenwriter , producer and film actor . His long film career spanned more than 60 years. From 1948 to 1950 he was President of the Directors Guild of America .

Life

George Marshall came to film as an extra and gag writer at the age of 20 after being expelled from the university in his hometown of Chicago. From 1916 he worked regularly as a director, mainly of westerns and, until the early sound film era, of comedic short films . With Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy he made two short films in 1932 as well as the feature film The Devil Brothers , in which Marshall also took on a supporting role as a knife-wielding regimental cook in addition to directing. He later directed various comedies with Bob Hope , WC Fields , Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis . Marshall earned a reputation as a "distinguished and reliable craftsman" who was at home in all genres.

One of his best-known works is the western comedy The Great Bluff (1939) with James Stewart as the young sheriff and Marlene Dietrich as the wicked bar singer. With the renowned film noir The Blue Dahlia (1946), in which Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake played the leading roles, Marshall also proved that he could also stage fabrics in a dark tone. Together with John Ford and Henry Hathaway , he directed the 1962 western epic That Was the Wild West , with Marshall responsible for the railroad scenes. Even in old age he directed television films, for example in the early 1970s episodes of the series Männerwirtschaft with Tony Randall and Jack Klugman .

Marshall died of pneumonia at the age of 83 and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City , California. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his film work .
