history

The village (villula) Kerihhinwis is mentioned for the first time in 765. Later it became the place name Gerchweis . In the 11th century, the feudal lord was the Bishop of Passau, and in 1076 Bishop Altmann gave three hubs to the Augustinian canons of St. Nikola .

A large part of the Hofmark remained in the possession of the Passau bishops. Around the middle of the 13th century they owned 11 houses, a mill with a fish pond, a tavern and a forestry court. They gave part of their property to local nobles as fiefs . Albero Waller received three lifelong lifts on July 6, 1255. In 1262 they reverted to the bishop, who enfeoffed the nobles of Harbach. Towards the end of the 13th century the property fell to the Counts of Hals through inheritance .

After their extinction, the Hofmark belonged to the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg , from whom it came to the barons of Frauenberg zu Haidenburg . The bishops reserved the right to lend individual goods, so in the 18th century several houses belonged to the rulership of the Fugger von Göttersdorf. The wooden castle fell into disrepair at the end of the 17th century and was not restored. In 1718 a fire destroyed 22 residential buildings and 20 barns.

In 1835 Gergweis became an independent municipality. In addition to the parish village of Gergweis, the community also included the hamlet of Reut. In 1855 there were 55 houses, in 1909 there were 82 houses in Gergweis. The 1916 census recorded 582 residents. On January 1, 1972, Gergweis came to the city of Osterhofen on the occasion of the regional reform in Bavaria . Gergweis has around 600 inhabitants today.

In the 13th century already parish Gergweis branch of Galgweis, 1866 Expositur , 1921 again parish.
